Steelers eye former All-Pro George Odum as urgent replacement after Killebrew’s devastating injury

Steelers Seek Former All-Pro George Odum as Killebrew’s Injury Creates Urgency

The Pittsburgh Steelers are on the hunt for a suitable replacement for special teams captain Miles Killebrew, who is facing a lengthy recovery after suffering a significant knee injury during the recent game against the Cleveland Browns. In response, the Steelers hosted two-time All-Pro George Odum for a free agent visit just ahead of their upcoming primetime clash with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Killebrew’s Injury and Immediate Impact

Killebrew’s injury, sustained in Week 6, leaves a notable void in Pittsburgh’s special teams unit. The Steelers are now tasked with finding a player who can step in and maintain the level of performance expected in such a crucial role. Killebrew has been an instrumental figure in special teams, and his absence will be felt as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.

Odum’s NFL Journey

George Odum’s path to the NFL has been anything but conventional. After going undrafted out of Central Arkansas in 2018, he found a home with the Indianapolis Colts, where he quickly established himself. Over three seasons, he participated in 65 consecutive regular-season games, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2020. During his tenure in Indianapolis, he collected 150 tackles, forced four fumbles, and intercepted two passes, all while logging significant time on special teams.

In 2022, Odum signed a three-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers, where he continued to excel, making the second-team All-Pro list as a special teams player. Despite a promising future, Odum was released this past summer following elbow surgery, leaving him available for teams like the Steelers.

A Perfect Fit for the Steelers

At 31 years old, Odum appears to have recovered well enough from his recent surgery to contribute effectively. His extensive experience on both kick and punt units positions him as an ideal candidate to fill Killebrew’s role. While it may be unrealistic for the Steelers to expect Odum to replicate Killebrew’s performance immediately, he stands out as a strong short-term option.

Beyond special teams, Odum’s defensive capabilities add another layer of value. Last season, he logged 138 defensive snaps for the 49ers and started seven games at safety for the Colts in 2021. Although the Steelers have depth at the safety position, with healthy players like DeShon Elliott and capable backups including Juan Thornhill, Chuck Clark, and Jabrill Peppers, having Odum in the mix could provide additional security if needed.

Looking Ahead

As the Steelers navigate the fallout from Killebrew’s injury, the potential addition of George Odum could prove pivotal. While no official agreement has been reached, Odum’s name is one to watch closely in the coming days as Pittsburgh seeks to solidify its roster and maintain its competitive edge in the league.
