Steelers eye Alabama’s Ty Simpson as next franchise QB in dramatic draft twist

Steelers Set Sights on Alabama’s Ty Simpson as Potential Franchise Quarterback

The search for a franchise quarterback has been a daunting task for the Pittsburgh Steelers since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger. A string of quarterbacks—including Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and most recently, Aaron Rodgers—has tried to fill the massive void left by Big Ben, but none have succeeded. As the quarterback carousel continues to spin, the Steelers are now turning their attention to the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft in hopes of finally securing their future signal-caller.

Draft Projections Favor Simpson

For months, analysts have anticipated that the Steelers would target a quarterback early in the draft. Recent projections by Dane Brugler suggest that Ty Simpson, the talented quarterback from the University of Alabama, could be a perfect fit for Pittsburgh. In Brugler’s latest mock draft for The Athletic, he highlights Simpson’s potential as the next starter for the franchise.

“Another offseason in which the Steelers will find themselves at a quarterback crossroads,” Brugler noted. He acknowledged that while Simpson’s inexperience may raise some eyebrows, the young quarterback possesses impressive skills. “He processes quickly, negotiates pressure, and gives his receivers chances to make plays.” Brugler also hinted at the possibility of Simpson returning to college, but emphasized that several teams in the top half of Round 1 will likely be vying for his services if he decides to declare for the draft.

Strengths of Ty Simpson

Simpson comes with high expectations, and many scouts believe he has the potential to be a standout in the NFL. Standing at 6’2″ and weighing just under 210 pounds, he has the prototypical size for a quarterback. As a former five-star recruit, he’s proving why he garnered such acclaim during his first season as the starter for the Crimson Tide.

One of Simpson’s most notable attributes is his poise under pressure. He demonstrates confidence when dropping back in the pocket, often making challenging throws while remaining composed. He only takes off when absolutely necessary, showing a strong sense of when to escape the pocket. His accuracy shines whether he is standing still or on the move, and when called upon to run, he possesses the quickness to convert crucial first downs.

As the Steelers prepare for a pivotal draft, all eyes will be on whether they can secure a talent like Ty Simpson, who might be the key to reviving their quarterback position and restoring hope to a passionate fanbase.
