Steelers Consider New Wide Receiver Option with Rakim Jarrett’s Workout

The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring fresh possibilities in their wide receiver lineup, having recently invited Rakim Jarrett, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass-catcher, for a workout. This development comes as the team prepares for their opening game of the season against the New York Jets.

Wide Receiver Search Continues

The Steelers have been actively assessing the wide receiver market throughout the offseason. While they have shown interest in notable names like Gabe Davis—whom they pursued twice—the veteran ultimately signed with the Buffalo Bills. Similarly, the team expressed interest in Terry McLaurin but has refrained from making any impulsive moves for major acquisitions.

Instead, Pittsburgh has opted for a more measured approach, exploring various options without rushing into significant trades. This was exemplified by their decision to bring in Jarrett for a workout, a move that suggests they are still looking to reinforce their receiving corps without committing to high-stakes deals.

Jarrett’s Background and Experience

Jarrett, 24, out of the University of Maryland, spent his first two seasons with the Buccaneers. In his time there, he appeared in 10 games, making two starts and recording 13 receptions for 184 yards. Primarily functioning as a slot receiver, Jarrett stands at 6 feet tall and weighs 192 pounds. In addition to his receiving capabilities, he has also shown proficiency as a kick returner, which could add valuable versatility to the Steelers’ game plan.

The recent release of Robert Woods from the practice squad, alongside the signing of Lance McCutchen to the 16-man scout team, indicates that the Steelers are re-evaluating their roster. While they have yet to make significant acquisitions from outside the organization, Jarrett’s workout hints at a desire to explore new talent at the wide receiver position.

Potential for Practice Squad Addition

If Jarrett impresses during his workout, he could secure a spot on Pittsburgh’s practice squad. This would allow him to acclimate to the team’s system without immediately taking up a roster spot, potentially replacing someone who did not make the final cut during the summer.

The Steelers have already invested in their slot receiver options, featuring Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson as primary targets. However, with a focus on enhancing their receiving options, the addition of a player like Jarrett could align perfectly with their offensive strategies moving forward.

As the Steelers navigate the early stages of the season, their pursuit of new talent reflects a commitment to strengthening their roster. The outcome of Jarrett’s workout could be a pivotal moment in solidifying their wide receiver depth.
