Spencer Rattler’s deep pass potential keeps Saints intrigued despite Seattle setback in evolving QB landscape

Spencer Rattler’s Future with the Saints Remains Bright Amid Seattle Setback

Despite a harsh defeat at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks, the New Orleans Saints still see potential in quarterback Spencer Rattler. While the team’s performance may leave fans disheartened, Rattler’s impressive statistics offer glimmers of hope for his future.

Rattler’s Deep Pass Performance

One of the most telling aspects of Rattler’s game this season is his ability to stretch the field. According to insights from Nick Underhill, Rattler is currently tied for first in the NFL for passes thrown at least 10 yards downfield. Over the course of three games, he has attempted 44 deep passes, matching the totals of notable quarterbacks such as Geno Smith and Dak Prescott.

Although Rattler has completed 38.6% of these attempts—lower than both Smith and Prescott—his performance surpasses several other prominent players, including Bryce Young, Cam Ward, Bo Nix, Kyler Murray, and Aaron Rodgers. This statistic underscores a significant level of trust from the coaching staff, as they continue to design plays that encourage aggressive downfield throws, blended with a strategic mix of screen passes.

From Top Prospect to Fifth-Round Pick

Rattler’s journey to the NFL has been anything but linear. Once considered a frontrunner for the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, he faced challenges that led to a drop in his draft stock, ultimately being selected in the fifth round by the Saints. While some may question his long-term viability as a franchise quarterback, it’s evident that he retains a degree of untapped potential.

Interestingly, Rattler is just 365 days younger than Tyler Shough, the Saints’ second-round rookie quarterback. This unique dynamic presents an intriguing scenario for New Orleans as they navigate their quarterback situation.

Looking Ahead for the Saints

As the Saints reflect on their recent struggles, the possibility of a quarterback change looms on the horizon. They may consider giving Shough a chance to prove himself, whether to shake up the team’s dynamics or to evaluate their roster comprehensively. However, for now, it appears that Rattler will continue to lead the charge, showcasing his ability to launch the ball downfield and keep defenses on their toes.

In a league that is constantly evolving, Rattler’s development will be watched closely as he seeks to carve out his niche within the Saints’ offense.
