Shedeur Sanders stuns as Browns QB choice, Myles Garrett praises explosive debut performance

Shedeur Sanders Takes the Helm as Browns’ Starting Quarterback

After the Cleveland Browns secured a decisive 24-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Kevin Stefanski faced a pivotal decision regarding the team’s quarterback situation. While he initially refrained from naming a starter during his postgame press conference, the air shifted in favor of Shedeur Sanders following a solid performance.

Sanders’ Debut Performance

In his first career start, Sanders showed promise, completing 11 of 20 passing attempts for 209 yards, along with one touchdown and one interception. His ability to connect with receivers and move the ball downfield caught the attention of both fans and coaches alike. When the dust settled, it was clear that Stefanski was ready to make a commitment.

On Monday, the sixth-year head coach declared Sanders as the team’s starting quarterback as they prepare to face the formidable San Francisco 49ers. “I thought communication was really good throughout the day with him,” Stefanski noted. “He has the mentality that he will make the adjustments to the speed of the game to make those improvements.”

A Franchise Quarterback in the Making

Before his debut, Sanders boldly asserted his belief that he could fill the role of the franchise quarterback that the Browns have sought since 1999. Now, with the spotlight on him, he has the opportunity to validate that claim.

Rookie third-round quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who had been vying for the starting position, suffered a concussion during a previous loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Although he has since cleared concussion protocol, Stefanski has opted to focus on the upcoming week, sidestepping questions about the team’s week-to-week quarterback strategy. Gabriel had five chances to lead the offense, but his physical limitations often hindered the Browns’ offensive flow.

The Offensive Shift

Sanders, on the other hand, presents a different threat. His proficiency in making accurate, vertical throws could revitalize an offense that struggled under the previous signal-caller. While Gabriel was known for his processing skills leading up to the NFL Draft, it was Sanders who demonstrated an ability to swiftly scan the field and deliver the ball effectively during his initial start.

To capitalize on his strengths, it will be crucial for Sanders to maintain a quick release to mitigate the risk of sacks.

Praise from Teammates

Following the game, the approval of Sanders’ performance from Browns’ star pass rusher Myles Garrett added further validation. Garrett remarked that not many quarterbacks in the league could have executed the impressive 52-yard pass to Isaiah Bond that Sanders completed in the first quarter. Such endorsements from the team’s marquee player could make the transition to a new starting quarterback even smoother.

Embracing the Opportunity

In the lead-up to his starting role, Sanders expressed candidly that the experience of being a backup felt unusual. However, he found solace in being named the starter once again. “I’m not gonna lie. I felt very relaxed,” he said. “Half of that comes from preparing, studying, and knowing I got God on my side.”

As the Browns gear up for their Week 13 matchup against the 49ers, all eyes will be on Sanders as he leads the charge. With six games left in the season, this is his chance to prove that he can indeed be the solution to the long-standing quarterback dilemma in Cleveland.
