Sean McDermott humorously highlights James Cook’s award-winning silence

Even in the limelight of being named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook remains a man of few words. His understated demeanor has become part of his identity, much to the amusement of head coach Sean McDermott.

A Man of Few Words

Throughout his career, Bills fans have come to appreciate Cook’s elusive nature—not just in his running style, but also in his communication. Last offseason, during a contract holdout, Cook succinctly explained his absence from practice with a simple, “Business.” When asked why he chose to attend minicamp to avoid fines, he responded, “I like my money.” These comments encapsulate Cook’s straightforward approach to football and life.

Career-Defining Performance

Cook’s recent performance against the Carolina Panthers was nothing short of spectacular. Rushing for 216 yards and two touchdowns, he played a pivotal role in the Bills’ dominant victory. This impressive total marked the sixth-highest rushing yardage in the franchise’s history, the best since O.J. Simpson’s legendary 1976 record.

His achievement did not go unnoticed, as Cook earned the title of AFC Offensive Player of the Week. McDermott took the opportunity to share the news with Cook before practice, humorously reflecting on their exchange.

A Playful Exchange

“It was a good conversation,” McDermott quipped, his sarcasm evident. “You know James, he loves ball. We don’t need to share a lot of words. But I do appreciate how our relationship has grown over the years. He was locked and loaded last week.” The playful banter between coach and player highlights the mutual respect they have developed over time.

Staying Humble After Success

Following his standout game, Cook remained humble, attributing his success to his offensive line. “I want to thank my O-line,” he stated. “Without them, I can’t even run.” Such humility is characteristic of Cook, who often deflects praise, focusing instead on his teammates.

Looking Ahead to the Chiefs

As the Bills prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, Cook’s contributions will be vital. The team will rely on his ability to manage the clock and keep the ball away from long-time rival Patrick Mahomes. The Bills may have an edge in the running game, particularly if Chiefs’ starting running back Isiah Pacheco is sidelined due to a knee injury.

In this crucial game, Cook’s performance will once again be under the spotlight, as he seeks to continue his impressive form and lead his team to victory.
