Seahawks Consider Trade for Jaguars’ Devin Lloyd to Strengthen Defense

In a bold move that could reshape the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive lineup, discussions have emerged surrounding a potential trade involving cornerback Riq Woolen and Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd. This strategy, proposed by long-time Seahawks analyst Rob Staton, aims to address Seattle’s glaring defensive weaknesses in one fell swoop, offering a solution that resonates on multiple fronts.

Woolen’s Decline and Trade Speculation

As the NFL trade deadline approaches on November 4, Woolen’s name has surfaced in conversations among teams scouting for cornerback help. Reports from NFL Network indicate that several franchises are eyeing Woolen as a viable trade target, a narrative likely fueled by the Seahawks themselves to stimulate interest.

Teams like the Raiders and Ravens have been mentioned as potential suitors for Woolen, but the spotlight is now shifting toward the Jaguars, who have enjoyed a surprising resurgence this season under the guidance of first-year head coach Liam Coen.

Targeting Devin Lloyd

Staton’s advocacy for a deal centered around Lloyd rather than draft picks stems from a pragmatic assessment of Woolen’s current value. Given his struggles this season, it’s unlikely that the Seahawks would receive anything substantial in return, potentially only a late-round pick at best. In this context, a player-for-player trade emerges as a more enticing option.

Lloyd, a promising linebacker who has yet to miss a tackle this season, would not only replace Woolen but also bring a level of reliability that the Seahawks’ defense desperately needs. Woolen, despite his potential, has become a liability in coverage, often exploited by opposing offenses during critical moments.

Defensive Weaknesses

The Seahawks’ defensive issues extend beyond Woolen. Second-year inside linebacker Tyrice Knight has also faced challenges, particularly in tackling. Knight’s inability to consistently bring down ball carriers has led to significant yardage gains against the Seahawks, exemplified by Jaylen Warren’s 65-yard catch and run that exposed Knight’s tackling deficiencies.

Bringing in Lloyd could alleviate these issues, effectively addressing two of Seattle’s most pressing defensive liabilities while also enhancing overall team performance.

Financial and Strategic Implications

Should the proposed trade materialize, it could present an opportunity for the Seahawks to negotiate a new contract with Lloyd, should they be interested in retaining him long-term. Conversely, this trade would also allow them to move on from Woolen, who is expected to seek a more lucrative deal elsewhere if he hits the open market in March.

However, while the acquisition of a linebacker like Lloyd is appealing, the Seahawks may want to consider addressing other critical areas, particularly on the offensive line. Despite a promising preseason, the right guard and center positions remain significant weaknesses. A trade that could secure a solid starter in one of those roles might yield a more substantial impact than simply bolstering the linebacker corps.

As the Seahawks navigate this pivotal moment in their season, the potential trade for Lloyd could signal a shift in strategy, aiming to elevate both the defense and overall team performance as they seek to remain competitive in the league.
