Seahawks’ depth move signals potential extended absence for Zach Charbonnet with Khalil Herbert joining the ranks

Seahawks Sign Khalil Herbert, Sparking Concerns Over Zach Charbonnet’s Health

The Seattle Seahawks have made a significant move in their backfield that could signal troubling news for running back Zach Charbonnet. While Kenneth Walker III is expected to remain the team’s leading rusher as they head into Week 4, the addition of veteran Khalil Herbert to the practice squad raises questions about Charbonnet’s status.

Charbonnet’s Injury Raises Eyebrows

When healthy, the Seahawks boast one of the most formidable running back groups in the NFL, with the duo of Walker and Charbonnet at the helm. However, injuries have been a recurring theme for this pair. Historically, Charbonnet has been the more reliable option, but he faced a setback this past Sunday, missing his first game since Week 7 of the 2023 season due to a foot injury.

The potential severity of Charbonnet’s injury has led the Seahawks to take action, as they are set to sign Herbert, who was recently released by the Indianapolis Colts. This move, reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, indicates that the coaching staff may be preparing for Charbonnet’s extended absence.

Herbert’s Background and Potential Impact

Herbert’s previous tenure with the Chicago Bears from 2021 to 2024 showcased his capability as a productive rusher. Over that period, he accumulated 372 carries for 1,791 yards and scored nine touchdowns, with his standout season occurring in 2022 when he rushed for 731 yards on 129 attempts. After a trade to the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2024 season, he was not re-signed, leaving him available for the Seahawks.

In addition to Charbonnet and Walker, the Seahawks still have George Holani and undrafted rookie Jacardia Wright on the roster, both of whom are healthy and ready to contribute. In their recent 44-13 victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, Walker, Holani, and Wright all had opportunities to carry the ball, showcasing the team’s depth.

A Strategic Move or a Cause for Concern?

The acquisition of Herbert may reflect a desire for added depth in the backfield, but it also raises speculation about the length of Charbonnet’s recovery. Head coach Mike Macdonald previously indicated that placing Charbonnet on injured reserve was not a consideration, but the signing of Herbert suggests a shift in strategy.

Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak appears determined to utilize a balanced approach, distributing carries among all available running backs. This strategy could prove vital as the Seahawks navigate the challenges of the upcoming games, ensuring that they remain competitive regardless of Charbonnet’s status.

As the Seahawks prepare for their next matchup, all eyes will be on Charbonnet’s recovery and Herbert’s integration into the roster. With the stakes high, the team’s depth will be tested in the weeks to come.
