Barkley Praises Shipley as Eagles’ Backup Running Back Steps Up in Gainwell’s Absence

Saquon Barkley holds Will Shipley in high regard, and that may be the most significant takeaway regarding the Philadelphia Eagles’ backup running back. The admiration is evident, particularly highlighted during a moment last season when Shipley found the end zone. Barkley sprinted down the sideline, a big smile plastered across his face as he celebrated the score, showcasing the camaraderie between the two players.

With Kenneth Gainwell now in Pittsburgh, Shipley has stepped into the role of Barkley’s direct backup, poised to make an impact in the Eagles’ backfield.

Who is Will Shipley?

Will Shipley, hailing from North Carolina, serves as the Eagles’ backup to the star running back, Saquon Barkley. Shipley was a highly sought-after recruit, ranked as the No. 2 running back in his class. He chose to attend Clemson University, where he also garnered attention as a five-star lacrosse recruit.

At Clemson, Shipley’s prowess on the field earned him first-team All-American honors in 2022. He was selected by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, marking the beginning of his professional journey. In his rookie season, Shipley showcased his versatility, carrying the ball 30 times for 82 yards, while also contributing four receptions for 35 yards and amassing 173 return yards.

Barkley on Shipley’s Skills

Before the season kicked off, Barkley spoke highly of Shipley, emphasizing his skills and intelligence on the field. “He’s a really good back. Great hands, great feet, can run routes… Smart; he always was smart. I hate to say this, but he’s probably the smartest back in the room. It kinda pisses me off how smart he is,” Barkley remarked, underscoring the respect he has for Shipley’s football acumen.

Barkley also appreciates the youthful energy Shipley brings to the team. “He keeps me young, I guess you can say,” Barkley noted. “You gotta always find somebody to go out there and compete with. Whether it’s in OTAs, drills, you want guys to go out and perform at a high level — and that’s what he does.”

As the Eagles move forward, Shipley’s role becomes increasingly vital in maintaining the team’s competitive edge, especially in light of Gainwell’s departure. With Barkley’s endorsement and Shipley’s growing experience, the Eagles’ backfield looks ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
