San Francisco 49ers surprise move: Garret Wallow claimed off waivers, Nick Martin’s status in doubt

San Francisco 49ers make strategic move with Garret Wallow

The San Francisco 49ers have made a significant roster adjustment by claiming linebacker Garret Wallow off waivers after he was released by the Denver Broncos earlier this week. In a corresponding move, the team placed Ben Bartch on injured reserve, allowing them to bolster their linebacker corps without sacrificing depth.

The linebacker landscape

At the season’s outset, the 49ers had Fred Warner leading the charge at linebacker, supported by Tatum Bethune, while Dee Winters and Nick Martin provided additional depth. Luke Gifford had also contributed as the SAM linebacker, showcasing his value on special teams. However, as injuries have mounted, the team has had to adapt quickly.

When Warner was sidelined, Bethune stepped into the starting role, and Curtis Robinson was elevated to backup. With Bethune also out, Robinson took the starting position, prompting the team to call up Jalen Graham in recent weeks. The 49ers face a unique situation: they can only promote three players from the practice squad before a permanent roster move must be made. By signing Wallow, they preserve Graham’s position on the practice squad while adding another player with special teams experience.

Wallow’s impact and experience

Garret Wallow brings 669 career special teams snaps to the 49ers, including 132 from this current season. His versatility as a five-phase special teams player—having participated in various roles throughout the Denver special teams unit as recently as Week 13—makes him an immediate asset. Wallow is expected to jump into special teams duties right away.

Defensively, he typically plays the weakside linebacker position, or WILL, which adds depth to the 49ers’ defense. With the recent signing of veteran Eric Kendricks, it appears likely that Kendricks will take the starting role, given his experience. This shift allows Robinson to revert to his primary role as a core special teams player, while Wallow could step into the backup role previously held by Martin.

Nick Martin’s uncertain status

The integration of Wallow raises questions about Nick Martin’s availability. Martin, who suffered a concussion against the Cleveland Browns, remains in the concussion protocol as the team emerges from their bye week. The 49ers seem cautious about his recovery, possibly opting to give him another week to heal rather than risk exacerbating his condition.

With Bartch now on injured reserve, Connor Colby, who was inactive last week, is likely to see game action, further complicating Martin’s prospects. If Martin is unable to play, it could lead to Wallow taking over the special teams snaps typically associated with Martin.

As the 49ers prepare for their next matchup, they find themselves navigating a tight roster situation, balancing health, experience, and the pressing need for depth as the season progresses.
