San Francisco 49ers shock fans by demoting breakout star Jake Tonges to third-string tight end

49ers Adjust Depth Chart with Surprising Move on Jake Tonges

The San Francisco 49ers have made a notable change in their tight end lineup, officially designating Jake Tonges as the third-string tight end on the team’s depth chart. This development arrives after a season filled with promise for the young player, who emerged as a significant contributor during the first half of the year.

Rise to Prominence

Tonges’ rise to prominence was largely catalyzed by a hamstring injury sustained by star tight end George Kittle in Week 1. With Kittle sidelined, Tonges stepped into the spotlight, showcasing his potential as he adapted to the demands of the NFL. Prior to this season, he had little to no professional experience, making his rapid development all the more impressive.

During his time on the field, Tonges made an impact, recording his first career reception and touchdown. His ability to step up and become a reliable option in the offense earned him recognition, and he quickly became a favorite target for quarterback Brock Purdy. Over the course of the season, he has accumulated four touchdowns, illustrating his capability to deliver in critical moments.

Return of Kittle and Decreased Role

However, the return of Kittle to the lineup significantly altered Tonges’ role. The veteran tight end’s presence tends to overshadow younger players, as he commands attention not only from defenders but also from the offensive playbook. With Kittle back in action, Tonges saw his involvement in the offense dwindle, a shift that is understandable given Kittle’s status as the top receiving threat on the team.

Despite this decrease in opportunities, head coach Kyle Shanahan has expressed confidence in Tonges’ future contributions. On Saturday, Shanahan confirmed Tonges’ move to the third-string position, but he emphasized that the young tight end remains an important asset as the team navigates the crucial stretch leading up to a potential playoff berth. Shanahan’s endorsement signals that while Tonges may not be in the spotlight, his skills and growth have not gone unnoticed.

As the 49ers continue their pursuit of postseason success, all eyes will be on how they utilize their depth and whether Tonges can find ways to make an impact when called upon.
