Sam Darnold stuns Vikings with revelation about near $100M deal before Seahawks switch

Sam Darnold’s Stunning Revelation on Vikings Departure

As the Minnesota Vikings prepare to clash with the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, all eyes will be on quarterback Sam Darnold as he faces his former team. Amidst the anticipation, intriguing details have surfaced regarding Darnold’s exit from Minnesota earlier this year, shedding light on the decisions that shaped both his career and the Vikings’ future.

Darnold’s Journey to Seattle

Darnold’s tenure with the Vikings began in March 2024 when he inked a one-year, $10 million deal. This move came just before the Vikings selected quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Unfortunately for McCarthy, a preseason injury dashed any hopes of a competitive quarterback battle, allowing Darnold to seize the moment. He delivered an impressive season, amassing over 4,300 passing yards and 35 touchdowns, leading the Vikings to a commendable 14-win campaign. However, the season ended on a disappointing note, highlighted by lackluster performances against the Lions and Rams in critical games.

Offseason Decisions and Shifting Fortunes

As the offseason unfolded, the Vikings faced pivotal decisions regarding their quarterback situation. Darnold ultimately opted for a three-year deal with the Seahawks, while Daniel Jones departed for the Colts. The Vikings also weighed the possibility of acquiring Aaron Rodgers but ultimately chose to stick with McCarthy as their starter. This series of choices has not aged well for Minnesota, as McCarthy is sidelined this Sunday due to a concussion, and his initial performances in the NFL have been statistically concerning. Meanwhile, Darnold and Jones have thrived in their new environments, while the Vikings, now sitting at 4-7, appear unlikely to make a postseason appearance.

Competitive Offer from the Vikings

According to insider reports, the narrative surrounding Darnold’s departure is more complex than a simple decision to let him go. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero revealed that the Vikings did not merely allow Darnold to walk away. In fact, they presented an offer comparable to what he ultimately accepted from the Seahawks—three years at $100.5 million.

However, the Vikings’ unwillingness to commit further stemmed not just from Darnold’s performance in his final games but also from their confidence in McCarthy. The franchise believed in their first-round pick’s potential, which would have been compromised had they retained Darnold as their starter.

Darnold’s journey is now a testament to the unpredictable nature of the NFL, where decisions made in one offseason can have lasting repercussions. As he prepares to face the Vikings, the contrast between his success and Minnesota’s struggles serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between opportunity and choice in professional football.
