Saints explore options by considering Justin Tucker for kicking role
The New Orleans Saints stirred up conversation on Monday with a somewhat unexpected move. Following a challenging performance by their kicking unit during Sunday’s game, reports indicated that the franchise was gearing up to audition new kickers. Among the names being considered was none other than seven-time Pro Bowler Justin Tucker.
Tucker, who spent 13 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, has recently found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The Ravens parted ways with him after serious allegations arose from 16 massage therapists, accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior. This breach of the league’s personal conduct policy led to his suspension, a fallout that has left many questioning his future in the NFL.
Head coach addresses Tucker’s workout
On Monday afternoon, Saints head coach Kellen Moore took the opportunity to address the rationale behind the decision to bring Tucker in for a workout. During a media session, Moore emphasized the importance of evaluating both the athlete’s on-field capabilities and their personal circumstances.
“I think that’s all a part of the visit, the conversations that you have to have, just like a lot of players,” Moore noted, as shared in a video from NewOrleans.Football. “There’s the field component of this. You bring guys in here to evaluate them. You just want to get to know the people… Certainly, he had a suspension in the league. He served that suspension. Obviously, there’s some information to collect.”
Moore’s comments highlight the Saints’ commitment to due diligence as they navigate this complex situation. “There’s certainly an evaluation part of it off the field and we’ll do our due diligence to go through that. We’ll collect as much information as we can, absolutely,” he added.
A complex legacy
Moore also acknowledged Tucker’s longstanding reputation as a leader within the Ravens organization. “He’s been one of their leaders for an extended period of time on a very successful team. Obviously, there’s been some stuff that’s been unfortunate. He’s gone through an experience, and I think it’s about collecting what that experience was.”
As the Saints weigh their options, the decision to consider Tucker underscores the complexities involved in player evaluations, especially when off-field issues come into play. The upcoming workout will be a critical moment for the franchise as they seek to solidify their kicking game while navigating the nuanced landscape of player conduct and reputation.
