Saints shake up roster: sign Kevin Austin Jr., bring Elijah Cooks onto practice squad amid injuries

Saints Revamp Roster Ahead of Final Stretch

As the New Orleans Saints approach the final three games of their regular season, the team is actively seeking to bolster its roster with fresh talent. On Thursday, the Saints made several key announcements that highlighted their commitment to improving their squad. The most notable move involved placing running back Devin Neal on Injured Reserve, a decision that underscores the ongoing injury challenges the team faces.

Roster Additions and Changes

In response to these challenges, the Saints have signed wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. from the practice squad to the active roster. Austin, who previously showcased his potential during training camp, brings additional depth to the receiving corps. Alongside him, the organization also added veteran running back Nyheim Miller-Hines to the practice squad, providing experienced options in the backfield.

Another intriguing addition is wide receiver Elijah Cooks, who has joined the practice squad. His signing, while perhaps flying under the radar, could prove significant as the team navigates injury woes.

Background on Elijah Cooks

Elijah Cooks, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 215 pounds, initially entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023 after a collegiate career at San Jose State. During his time with the Jaguars, Cooks participated in 11 games and recorded three receptions for 38 yards. He also spent part of the 2024 postseason on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles, gaining valuable experience that could benefit him as he joins the Saints.

The Saints’ Executive Vice President and General Manager, Mickey Loomis, detailed these moves, stating, “New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced today that the club has signed wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. from the practice squad to the active roster, signed wide receiver Elijah Cooks and running back Nyheim Miller-Hines to the practice squad, placed running back Devin Neal on Injured Reserve, and terminated the practice squad contract of kicker Cade York.”

Strategic Moves Amidst Challenges

These roster adjustments reflect the Saints’ proactive approach as they gear up for the concluding stretch of the season. With injuries taking their toll, the team’s ability to adapt and find new contributors will be crucial as they aim to solidify their playoff aspirations. The addition of players like Austin and Cooks not only enhances the roster’s depth but also provides an opportunity for emerging talents to make their mark in the league.
