Rookie Bhayshul Tuten poised for a bigger role with Jaguars after Tank Bigsby’s departure

There’s an unusual buzz surrounding a Jacksonville Jaguars backup running back this week, and it’s centered on fourth-round rookie Bhayshul Tuten. With Tank Bigsby recently traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, many are eager to see how Tuten might capitalize on the opportunity presented by Bigsby’s exit.

Understanding the Current Backfield Dynamics

Before diving into Tuten’s potential, it’s essential to contextualize his position within the Jaguars’ backfield. Travis Etienne, the team’s leading back, dominated the snaps in Week 1. He took the field for 36 plays, securing 16 carries and three receptions, solidifying his status as the clear RB1.

In contrast, Tuten’s playing time has been limited. In his debut, he only saw four snaps, primarily behind Bigsby, who was present on 12 plays, earning five carries. This distribution illustrates the hierarchy that Tuten was initially working under. Now that Bigsby has moved on, expectations are shifting towards how Tuten will fill that role.

The Transition to Increased Responsibility

With Bigsby’s departure, Tuten is likely to absorb a portion of the early-down workload previously assigned to him. It’s reasonable to anticipate that he could take on a similar number of snaps, perhaps around 16 combined, alongside Etienne, and potentially garner five or six carries in future games.

However, it’s crucial to temper expectations. While Tuten is undoubtedly an explosive talent, he remains firmly in a backup position as long as Etienne is healthy. For now, he is more of a handcuff option rather than a fantasy starter. His value increases significantly if Etienne were to face an injury, thrusting Tuten into the spotlight as a potential starter.

A Fresh Opportunity for the Exciting Rookie

For Jaguars fans, this is an exciting chance to witness Tuten’s abilities on the field without the competition of another back vying for carries. His explosive style of play could add a dynamic element to the Jaguars’ offensive strategy moving forward.

As the season progresses, the focus will be on how the coaching staff integrates Tuten into the game plan. For now, he stands as a promising prospect, waiting for the right moment to showcase his skills in a more significant role.
