Griffin Critiques Giants’ Handling of Wilson
Robert Griffin III, the former NFL quarterback, has voiced strong disapproval over the New York Giants’ recent decision to bench Russell Wilson. Griffin believes the move reflects a troubling lack of respect for the veteran quarterback.
The Giants, facing a dismal 0-3 start to the current season, made the controversial choice to replace Wilson with rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart. This marks the second time in just three seasons that Wilson has found himself relegated to a backup role.
Wilson’s Performance Under Scrutiny
This season, Wilson has posted a completion rate of 59.1%, amassing 778 passing yards, alongside three touchdowns and three interceptions. Despite these statistics, his performance has faced criticism, particularly as he has failed to throw a touchdown in two of his three starts and has not surpassed 200 passing yards in those games.
Yet, Griffin argues that the Giants’ struggles cannot be solely attributed to Wilson’s play. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his concerns, stating that the treatment of Wilson is unjust.
A Call for Respect in the League
Griffin highlighted a perceived double standard within the league, referencing how former Giants quarterback Eli Manning was treated throughout his career, despite facing his own challenges. “They doing Russell Wilson so dirty,” Griffin tweeted. “I never hear former teammates attack Eli Manning and his record or how he performed outside of the two Super Runs they had. They show him the respect he has earned and appreciate him for helping them win at the highest level. That ain’t right.”
Griffin’s comments encapsulate a broader conversation around the respect afforded to quarterbacks in the league and the expectations placed upon them. As the Giants navigate a tumultuous season, the implications of their decisions on Wilson will be closely examined.
