Robbie Chosen cut by 49ers reflects shifts in San Francisco’s wide receiver strategy

The San Francisco 49ers have made a notable change in their wide receiver strategy, cutting Robbie Chosen just over a month after signing him. This decision raises questions about the health and performance of the team’s receiving corps. It could indicate that the unit is less plagued by injuries than previously believed or perhaps serves as a vote of no confidence in Chosen’s capabilities.

A brief overview of Chosen’s journey

Chosen, formerly known as Robby Anderson, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Temple University. His professional career began with the New York Jets in 2016, and over the span of nine seasons, he has also played for the Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and Miami Dolphins.

During his time in Miami, Chosen’s production dwindled significantly. In the 2023 season, he participated in nine games but managed only four receptions. His struggles continued into the 2024 season, where he played just two games, making a single catch for five yards. Across his career, he has appeared in 122 games, recording 380 receptions for a total of 5,087 yards and scoring 30 touchdowns.

Injury concerns and potential roster implications

At 32 years of age, Chosen was brought on by the 49ers in early August, a move made to address the team’s injury woes among receivers. Although he showcased a strong performance with a standout second half in a preseason game against backups, it was not enough to secure his spot on the roster.

The recent addition of Kendrick Bourne, a familiar face, likely contributed to Chosen’s expendability within the team. Given Chosen’s declining production in recent seasons, it seems that the best opportunity for him moving forward may be a practice squad position elsewhere in the league.

Looking ahead

This development serves as a critical moment for Chosen, presenting him with a chance to demonstrate his commitment to his football career. As the 49ers refine their roster, the focus will shift to how they manage their receiving options moving forward. The decision to part ways with Chosen could signify a broader strategy aimed at enhancing team performance as the season progresses.
