Ravens shock fans: Roquan Smith emerges as potential offseason trade candidate amidst youth movement

Ravens consider offseason trade for Roquan Smith as youth movement takes shape

As the Baltimore Ravens strategize for the future, a surprising name has emerged as a potential trade candidate: All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith. This development signals a shift in the team’s approach, as they look to blend seasoned talent with youthful potential.

A Valuable Trade Chip

Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report has identified Smith as one of the most valuable offseason trade assets for each NFL team. Given the Ravens’ focus on rejuvenating their roster, it’s not hard to see why they might consider moving on from the 28-year-old linebacker. Gagnon notes that the emergence of promising players like Teddye Buchanan and Trenton Simpson could make Smith expendable, particularly as the team seeks to save significant salary cap space while addressing linebacker depth in the league.

Smith’s Impact and Performance

Since joining the Ravens in a trade from the Chicago Bears in 2022, Smith has established himself as a cornerstone of the defense. His accolades include Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Over the course of his career, he has accumulated impressive statistics: 1,069 tackles, 67 tackles for loss, 37 pass deflections, 33 quarterback hits, 21.5 sacks, 10 interceptions, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and two defensive touchdowns.

However, Smith’s current season has seen him miss two games due to injury. Despite this setback, he has still managed to record 64 tackles, four tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, two pass deflections, one fumble recovery, and a touchdown. While he remains productive, there are indications that his performance may not be at the peak level it once was. Pro Football Focus currently ranks him as the 33rd-best linebacker out of 83 in the NFL, with a grade of 68.5.

Emerging Talent on the Roster

The Ravens’ linebacker corps is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly with the rise of Buchanan and Simpson. Buchanan leads the Ravens in tackles this season with 69, while Simpson has showcased his pass-rushing abilities with 1.5 sacks. Both players are under 25, suggesting a bright future ahead for the Ravens’ defense.

The notion of trading Smith after three consecutive seasons of All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition may seem outlandish to some. Yet, as he approaches the age of 29 by the start of the 2026 season, the front office faces a pivotal decision. If the Ravens wish to capitalize on his current market value—potentially securing a second or third-round pick—now may be the optimal time to make a move before his performance begins to decline.

Looking Ahead

As the offseason approaches, the Ravens find themselves at a crossroads. Balancing the need for immediate performance with a commitment to long-term development will be crucial. Whether they decide to retain Smith or explore trade options, the outcome will significantly shape the team’s future trajectory. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely as the organization navigates these pivotal decisions.
