Ravens Strengthen Defensive Line with Former Bengals
The Baltimore Ravens have bolstered their defensive front by signing two former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackles, Josh Tupou and Taven Bryan, to their practice squad.
Tupou’s Tenure in Cincinnati
Josh Tupou, a familiar face in Cincinnati, played six seasons with the Bengals from 2017 to 2023. He was part of the team during its memorable runs to the Super Bowl in 2021 and the AFC Championship Game in 2022. During his time in Cincinnati, Tupou participated in 65 regular season games, starting in 23 of them. His statistics include 86 tackles, six quarterback hits, two sacks, and one forced fumble, reflecting his contribution to the Bengals’ defensive efforts.
However, as the Bengals look to reshape their roster ahead of the 2024 season, they decided to part ways with the veteran defensive tackle. The team opted to go in a different direction, bringing in Kris Jenkins Jr. and McKinnley Jackson through the draft. In May, Tupou signed with the Ravens and made his presence felt in three games last season.
Bryan’s Short Stint with the Bengals
Taven Bryan, a former first-round pick, spent the training camp with the Bengals but was ultimately released during the final roster cuts. His journey with the team was brief, yet he remains a player of interest given his pedigree.
Injury Concerns Prompt Ravens’ Move
The Ravens’ decision to sign both Tupou and Bryan comes on the heels of an unfortunate injury to star defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike, who is facing an undisclosed injury that may sideline him for an extended period. The move reflects Baltimore’s proactive approach as they prepare for their upcoming matchups against the Bengals.
Upcoming Matchups in the AFC North Rivalry
Cincinnati and Baltimore are set to clash twice this season, with the first encounter scheduled for Thanksgiving night on November 27. The teams will meet again two weeks later in Cincinnati on December 14. As the rivalry intensifies, the addition of Tupou and Bryan adds an intriguing layer to the defensive strategies each team will employ.
The Ravens officially announced the signings, confirming the addition of both defensive tackles to their practice squad. As the AFC North landscape shifts, all eyes will be on how these moves impact the dynamic between these two rival teams.
