Ravens’ playoff hopes fumble as Derrick Henry struggles to hold onto the ball in crucial moments

Ravens’ Playoff Aspirations Slip Away Amid Derrick Henry’s Fumbling Woes

Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry is facing scrutiny after a shaky start to the season, marked by a troubling trend of fumbles. In the first three games, Henry has coughed up the football on three separate occasions, raising concerns about his reliability at a critical position.

Crucial Moments Highlight Fumbling Issues

Henry’s latest miscue came during a pivotal moment in the Ravens’ Week 3 clash against the Detroit Lions. With the team poised to seize the lead in the fourth quarter, Henry’s fumble allowed the Lions to regain possession deep in Ravens territory. They capitalized on the opportunity, converting the turnover into a field goal that pushed them ahead by seven points, ultimately leading to a 20-13 victory for Detroit.

Following the game, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh addressed the issue directly. “We have to get it fixed,” he stated during a post-game press conference. “That was kind of a blind shot there. I thought he had the ball in good position, but the defender got a good look at it. It was a little bit of the perfect storm, but still, we just want to protect the football. All our guys do, and we have to do it. We have to be good at it.”

Support from Teammates Amid Struggles

Despite these setbacks, the Ravens remain committed to utilizing Henry as a cornerstone of their offensive attack. Tight end Mark Andrews expressed confidence in his teammate, acknowledging the pressure that comes with such high expectations. “It’s tough. We know the type of guy that [Derrick Henry] is, and there’s no one harder on himself than Derrick is. We’ll get right. These are the types of things that we’ll be better at, and he’s the best of the best, so I have complete trust in him,” Andrews remarked.

Andrews, having faced his own moments of adversity, understands the difficulty of bouncing back from mistakes. His empathy for Henry highlights the camaraderie within the locker room, as teammates rally around each other in challenging times.

Lamar Jackson’s Confidence in Henry

Quarterback Lamar Jackson also weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the need to move forward. “We just have to let it go. We had like six and a half minutes left in the game when that situation happened, and our defense did a great job stopping those guys,” Jackson noted. “We just have to find a way to drive the ball down the field and score right away. We were still in the game. It wasn’t like it was a blowout or anything like that.”

Jackson’s faith in Henry is crucial, especially given the running back’s undeniable talent. Henry showcased his explosive ability with a remarkable 28-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter against the Lions, a reminder of just how vital he is to the Ravens’ offensive hopes.

Looking Ahead: A Season on the Line

With a disappointing 1-2 record, the Ravens find themselves in a precarious position. The missed opportunities stemming from Henry’s fumbles have left them pondering what could have been—a potential 3-0 start instead of their current struggles. As the season progresses, the Ravens will need Henry to regain his form and secure the football to keep their playoff aspirations alive.

The Ravens’ success hinges on their ability to rally together as a team, with Henry at the forefront. If he can overcome these obstacles, the path to victory may still be within reach. The stakes are high, and the pressure is mounting for the star running back as he aims to turn his season around.
