Ravens make strategic defensive shift cutting veteran playmakers Johnson and Miller for fresh talent in NFL roster shuffle

Ravens Part Ways with Veterans for Roster Revamp

The Baltimore Ravens made significant moves on Wednesday, reshaping their defensive lineup by cutting ties with two familiar names in the NFL. In a bid to bolster their roster, the Ravens released running back D’Ernest Johnson and wide receiver Anthony Miller, paving the way for the acquisitions of nose tackle Josh Tupou and defensive tackle Taven Bryan.

Impact of the Cuts

Both Johnson and Miller were primarily stationed on the practice squad prior to their release. Johnson, a running back known for his tenure with the Cleveland Browns, showcased his potential during his time in Cleveland. In 2021, he amassed 534 rushing yards on 100 carries, averaging an impressive 5.3 yards per attempt while also contributing 19 receptions. After leaving the Browns, Johnson spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, continuing to hone his skills.

Miller, once regarded as an up-and-coming talent with the Chicago Bears, had a promising start to his career. He recorded 52 receptions for 656 yards in 2019, following a strong rookie campaign where he found the end zone seven times. However, the past few years have been challenging. In 2021, injuries limited him to just three games across two teams—the Houston Texans and the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a brief hiatus, he returned for two games with the Ravens last season, but his impact was limited.

Future Prospects

Both players possess enough pedigree to attract interest from other teams, likely as practice squad additions. While the Ravens have made a clear decision to move in a new direction, there remains a possibility for a reunion if injuries plague their roster again.

As Baltimore navigates these changes, they are not only looking towards immediate improvements but also laying the groundwork for a more competitive future. The decision to part ways with Johnson and Miller reflects a calculated strategy in an ever-evolving league, where fresh talent is often prioritized to maintain a competitive edge.
