Ravens face Week 1 challenge without Likely and Ricard against Bills’ defense

The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up for their Week 1 clash against the Buffalo Bills, but they will do so without two pivotal offensive players. On Friday, the team confirmed that tight end Isaiah Likely and fullback Patrick Ricard will not be available for the Sunday night showdown.

Isaiah Likely’s Injury Recovery

The absence of Isaiah Likely was anticipated, as reports emerged earlier this week indicating he was unlikely to suit up against the Bills. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Likely is still recovering from a broken bone in his foot, an injury that required surgery in late July. Rapoport noted that Likely is healing as expected and should be ready to return early in the season.

Likely, selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, enjoyed a breakout season in 2024. He participated in all 16 games, amassing 42 receptions for 477 yards and six touchdowns. Over his career, he has recorded 14 touchdown catches, despite primarily serving as the second tight end behind Mark Andrews.

Mark Andrews Steps Up

Fortunately for the Ravens, they still possess a formidable tight end in Mark Andrews. The veteran has a personal vendetta against the Bills, having faced a critical moment in their previous playoff encounter where a drop by Andrews proved costly for Baltimore. As he steps onto the field this week, Andrews will look to make a statement and contribute significantly to the Ravens’ offensive efforts.

The Impact of Losing Patrick Ricard

The situation with fullback Patrick Ricard presents a unique challenge. Unlike Likely, who has an established backup, the Ravens lack a direct replacement for Ricard. His absence means Baltimore may have to adjust their offensive schemes, potentially sidelining fullback formations entirely.

They do have the option of promoting practice squad fullback Lucas Scott to the active roster, but this decision will likely be made closer to game day. The Ravens will need to strategize effectively to compensate for Ricard’s absence, as his role is integral to their run-heavy offensive approach.

As the Ravens prepare for this crucial matchup, the absence of Likely and Ricard adds an extra layer of complexity to their game plan. The Bills’ defense will undoubtedly be a formidable challenge, and the Ravens will need to adapt quickly to maintain their competitive edge.
