Ravens bolster defensive line depth with Taven Bryan signing

The Baltimore Ravens are taking proactive steps to strengthen their defensive line as they navigate the uncertainty surrounding Nnamdi Madubuike’s neck injury. Reports indicate the Ravens are signing former first-round draft pick Taven Bryan to their practice squad, a move aimed at providing much-needed depth amid Madubuike’s ongoing recovery.

Madubuike’s Injury Status

Madubuike, a key player in the Ravens’ defense, has been sidelined since suffering his injury in Week 2. The two-time Pro Bowler was unable to play during the Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions, having not practiced at all leading up to the game. As the team prepares for Week 4, Madubuike’s availability remains uncertain, and the addition of Bryan suggests the Ravens might be preparing for his absence this Sunday.

Taven Bryan’s Career Overview

Taven Bryan was selected as the 29th overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2018 NFL Draft, but his career has been marked by inconsistency. Over four seasons with the Jaguars, Bryan started just 17 of 63 games, ultimately failing to secure a contract for the 2022 season. He then joined the Cleveland Browns, where he made 16 starts, but his tenure there was short-lived.

After a stint with the Indianapolis Colts, where he started 13 of 34 games over two seasons, Bryan was with the Cincinnati Bengals during the offseason. However, he did not make the final roster, leading him back to the practice squad with the Ravens.

Performance Metrics

In 2024, Bryan recorded a Pro Football Focus grade of 58.2, with run defense and pass-rush grades of 55.3 and 65.3, respectively. Despite his experience, making a significant impact on the Ravens’ starting lineup will be an uphill battle for Bryan, especially given the competitive nature of the defensive front.

As the Ravens look to address their defensive needs, Bryan’s signing reflects their commitment to maintaining depth in critical positions. The upcoming games will reveal how effectively the Ravens can navigate Madubuike’s injury and integrate Bryan into their defensive strategy.
