Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty poised for greater opportunities as coach emphasizes increased carries

As the Las Vegas Raiders faced criticism following their Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, running back Ashton Jeanty found himself at the center of the scrutiny. Despite being credited with 14 touches during the game, Jeanty’s limited playing time raised eyebrows, particularly when he was sidelined during crucial moments, including a two-minute drill in the second quarter and late in the fourth quarter while the team trailed.

Coaching Insights on Jeanty’s Role

Head coach Pete Carroll addressed the unusual use of Jeanty post-game, attributing it to the rookie’s adjustment period as he “breaks into the NFL.” Carroll expressed confidence in Jeanty’s potential, assuring fans that the young running back would see an increase in carries moving forward.

“We’re just getting started with Jeanty,” Carroll stated. “He’s figuring it out, and he’ll get more carries. We have to run the ball more effectively. We only got 68 yards, and that’s not enough. We need more than that. We’re bringing him along, and more will come.”

Jeanty’s Perspective on His Usage

On Wednesday, Jeanty shared his thoughts on his workload, echoing the sentiments of Raiders fans. “I don’t think you draft a guy like me to not get me carries and touches, and I’m ready for the responsibility,” he said. “It’s gonna start with me in the run game, and I’ve got to continue to get better.”

While Jeanty acknowledged some struggles in pass protection, his sporadic substitution for Zamir White during key moments raised questions. Just as he began to find his rhythm, the Raiders opted to pull him from the game, leaving many to wonder about the decision-making surrounding his deployment.

A Rookie Ready to Shine

Jeanty made a compelling case for more consistent usage. The Raiders invested a significant pick in him, and it’s critical to leverage his talents across all three downs and in high-pressure situations. The Boise State alum is eager to become the team’s workhorse and believes that overcoming the growing pains is vital.

“The big-time performances that everybody might be expecting, those will come, but it’s just about consistency,” Jeanty remarked.

In his second outing, Jeanty appeared more at ease on the field, showcasing his power, vision, and elusiveness. With improved blocking and a steady increase in touches, he is on the cusp of a breakout performance.

Looking Ahead

As the Raiders prepare for their next match, the focus will be on maximizing Jeanty’s potential. The coaching staff’s commitment to enhancing his role could be a game-changer for the team as they strive for a more effective run game. With Jeanty ready to take on more responsibility, fans are left eagerly anticipating his next opportunity to shine.
