Raiders’ puzzling play-calling keeps Ashton Jeanty sidelined after promising start as team struggles against Chargers

Raiders’ Confounding Play-Calling Keeps Ashton Jeanty on the Sidelines

The Las Vegas Raiders’ Week 2 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers was marked not just by Geno Smith’s underwhelming performance, but also by perplexing decisions regarding the utilization of rookie running back Ashton Jeanty. After a promising start, Jeanty’s limited involvement in crucial moments raised eyebrows and sparked frustration among fans and analysts alike.

Inexplicable Substitutions

As Jeanty began to find his rhythm in the second quarter, his absence during the two-minute drill before halftime was particularly baffling. Instead of relying on the player who had just started to hit his stride, the coaching staff opted to deploy Dylan Laube, who later received considerable playing time as the Raiders attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. Additionally, Zamir White, a former fourth-round pick, was substituted in far too often, further diminishing Jeanty’s opportunities.

When questioned about Jeanty’s usage after the game, head coach Pete Carroll described the team’s approach as “breaking him in.” He emphasized the need for improved rushing effectiveness, yet it was puzzling to see the Raiders continually sideline their most talented back.

Conflicting Strategies

The irony of the situation is striking. Just a week prior, Jeanty was given a hefty workload of 21 touches in the season opener, suggesting that the team had already initiated his integration into the offense. Given the high expectations associated with being selected sixth overall in the draft, it is clear that Jeanty should be featured more prominently during critical game situations, particularly when the offense struggles—as it did on Monday night.

Using a top draft pick to limit his field time in favor of a sixth-round pick like Laube, or a previously underperforming player like White, seems counterproductive.

Signs of Promise

Despite his limited touches, Jeanty demonstrated flashes of potential during the game. He accumulated 43 yards on 11 carries, showcasing his power, vision, and agility. His impressive jump cuts and spin moves hinted at the talent that made him a highly regarded prospect.

The challenge now lies in ensuring that Jeanty receives the ball more frequently, allowing him to contribute effectively and provide the spark the Raiders desperately need. The coaching staff must reassess their strategy to maximize the impact of their promising rookie, particularly as the team navigates through a difficult start to the season.

Looking Ahead

As the Raiders continue to search for solutions, the need for a more cohesive offensive strategy becomes increasingly evident. Engaging Jeanty in critical moments could be key to unlocking the team’s potential and improving their chances for success in upcoming games.
