Raiders haunted by turnovers as Pete Carroll critiques Geno Smith’s costly interceptions in third straight loss

Raiders Struggle with Turnovers in Third Consecutive Loss

The Las Vegas Raiders faced off against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, aiming to turn their fortunes around. Despite a solid performance on the field, it was a familiar foe—turnovers—that ultimately led to their downfall. Quarterback Geno Smith’s inability to protect the ball proved costly, as the Raiders succumbed to their third straight defeat.

Pete Carroll on Geno Smith’s Interceptions

Head Coach Pete Carroll did not hold back in his assessment of Smith’s performance. “Those are huge plays in the first half, third down opportunities, third down conversions, and everything on both plays was the same thing,” Carroll explained. “You can’t expect to turn the ball over like that and win. It doesn’t happen.”

Despite Smith’s three interceptions, the Raiders’ defense made significant stops in the first half, giving the team a fighting chance. Carroll acknowledged their effort, stating, “They were great, and it gave us a chance. The score could have been ridiculous after the first quarter, but it wasn’t, and so we learn. We grow, and we have to do better.”

Analysis of the Interceptions

Carroll detailed the specific interceptions, highlighting Smith’s struggles against the coverage. “I know Geno is sick,” he mentioned. “The two plays that they pick on, the first two were just, he just didn’t see it, got fooled by the coverage.” The coach also commented on the third interception, which came from a route the team frequently executes. “I don’t know if the ball was behind the receiver or not, I couldn’t tell from my vantage point,” he added. “The guy makes a heck of a play too, again, unfortunately.”

The game came down to a critical final drive where the Raiders’ defense failed to hold strong, allowing the Bears to reach field goal range. “Since field goals were invented, you’ve got to get the guy on the edge. We didn’t get him, so it’s tough,” Carroll lamented.

Looking Ahead and Team Energy

As the Raiders regroup after this latest setback, questions linger regarding the quarterback situation, particularly concerning Smith’s league-leading interception count. When asked if he considered replacing Smith with Kenny Pickett, Carroll was firm. “No. Nope. We’re not there.”

Amidst the struggles, one bright spot was defensive end Maxx Crosby, who continues to shine with his relentless energy and playmaking ability. “Whether you win or lose, the facts remain, and he was incredible today,” Carroll noted. “Just incredible plays, mid-play making, and he’s doing it clean.”

The Raiders now face the challenge of rebuilding and finding a way to break their losing streak. With their sights set on improvement, the team must leverage the lessons learned from this defeat as they prepare for their next contest.
