Preston Smith Returns to Washington Commanders After Injury Setback for Deatrich Wise

A familiar face is set to don the burgundy and gold once more, as the Washington Commanders have announced the signing of veteran edge rusher Preston Smith. The news, initially reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, marks Smith’s return to a franchise where he began his professional career. Details regarding the length and financial aspects of the contract remain undisclosed at this time.

A Second Chance in Washington

Smith, originally selected in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, spent four seasons with the Commanders before moving on to new challenges. His journey has taken him through both Green Bay and Pittsburgh, where he played for the Packers and was later traded to the Steelers mid-season in 2024. However, his time in Pittsburgh was less than memorable, as he struggled to make a significant impact on the field. In eight games with the Steelers, Smith managed just two sacks and found himself as a healthy scratch in two of the team’s final three matchups, which included their playoff exit against the Baltimore Ravens.

Filling a Void

The timing of Smith’s signing is particularly critical for the Commanders, who recently faced a significant loss on their defense. Fellow edge rusher Deatrich Wise sustained a season-ending injury during Week 2, leaving a noticeable gap in Washington’s defensive lineup. Smith’s experience and proven track record could provide the necessary boost as the Commanders look to maintain their competitive edge.

A Proven Track Record

Throughout his career, Smith has consistently showcased his ability to pressure quarterbacks, achieving eight or more sacks in six different seasons. His most recent campaign in 2023 was no exception, where he continued to demonstrate his prowess on the field. As he re-joins the Commanders, expectations will undoubtedly be high for the Mississippi State product to step up and fill the void left by Wise’s absence.

Looking Ahead

As the NFL season progresses, the Commanders will be looking to harness Smith’s experience and skills to strengthen their defense. With a mix of both returning talent and new additions, the team aims to navigate the challenges ahead and remain competitive in the league.
