Pittsburgh Steelers face Jalen Ramsey’s illness as injury list grows ahead of Browns matchup

The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for a crucial Week 17 clash against the Cleveland Browns, but they are now faced with more uncertainty as illness sweeps through the team. Star cornerback Jalen Ramsey has been added to the injury report after missing practice due to an unspecified illness, leaving his status for the upcoming game in the balance.

Injury Concerns Mount

While the nature of Ramsey’s illness remains unclear, the Steelers are no strangers to health challenges this season. Earlier in the year, the team dealt with multiple players sidelined by various illnesses, including inside linebacker Cole Holcomb, who faced an extended absence while recovering. The final injury report will be released after Friday’s practice, providing clarity on Ramsey’s availability for the pivotal matchup against the Browns.

Secondary Struggles Intensify

The Steelers have been proactive in addressing their injury woes, recently signing Tre Flowers to bolster their depth. However, the team’s secondary remains a significant concern. They are currently without James Pierre, who has missed the last two games due to a calf injury, and Brandin Echols, who exited Week 16 against the Detroit Lions with a groin issue. While both players could return soon, the Steelers find themselves with limited options should either be unable to play.

In Week 16, Ramsey had to shift back to the slot cornerback position following Echols’ injury, showcasing his versatility. Should neither Pierre nor Echols be available against the Browns, Flowers is poised to step in as a starter.

Strategic Decisions Ahead

The Steelers are also weighing their options strategically. With a chance to clinch the AFC North title before even taking the field in Week 17—if the Baltimore Ravens fall to the Green Bay Packers the night before—there may be a case for resting Ramsey, Echols, and Pierre. Ensuring their health for the postseason could be a priority for the coaching staff, especially as they navigate the challenges posed by both illness and injury.

As the game approaches, the Steelers are left to hope that their roster can remain intact and ready for the high stakes that lie ahead. The final injury decisions will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their playoff aspirations.
