Pittsburgh Steelers in turmoil as Cole Holcomb’s illness sidelines him for third straight game

Cole Holcomb’s Ongoing Absence Looms Over Steelers

The injury crisis continues to plague the Pittsburgh Steelers as they prepare for their Week 11 matchup. A significant absence will once again be felt, as middle linebacker Cole Holcomb has been sidelined for a third consecutive game due to illness.

Holcomb’s Impact on the Team

Holcomb, who returned to the Steelers after missing the entirety of the previous season while recovering from a knee injury, was expected to be a key component of the defense. His absence from practice this week was a clear indicator that he would not participate in the upcoming AFC North clash. As the team holds a 5-4 record, there is a growing sentiment that the Steelers are merely holding onto their position at the top of the division, largely due to the overwhelming number of injuries plaguing the roster.

Defensive Adjustments in Holcomb’s Absence

With Holcomb out, the Steelers will rely on a trio of linebackers to fill the void. Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson will lead the charge, joined by Malik Harrison, who has been primarily utilized as a run-stopper since his return from the Reserve/Injured List. The diminished depth at linebacker could force Harrison into a more prominent role, increasing his snap count against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The responsibility on Queen and Wilson escalates as well. Both have faced mounting criticism throughout the season for their performances, and the stakes are high as they attempt to stabilize a defense that has struggled to find its rhythm. When on form, the duo has the potential to be a formidable force in the middle of the defense; however, inconsistent play has hampered their effectiveness, leading to ongoing challenges for the Steelers’ defensive unit.

Looking Ahead

As the Steelers navigate through their injury-riddled campaign, the absence of Holcomb highlights the team’s ongoing struggles. With each passing week, the pressure mounts on the remaining linebackers to step up and elevate their performance, ensuring the team remains competitive in a tough division.
