Patriots Face Major Setback Ahead of Jets Showdown
The New England Patriots are bracing for a challenging Week 11 matchup against the New York Jets, having confirmed that four significant players will not be available for the game. This development comes as the Patriots look to maintain their strong 8-2 record at Gillette Stadium.
Key Players Ruled Out
The list of players sidelined includes tight end Austin Hooper, receiver Kayshon Boutte, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, and linebacker Christian Elliss. Each of these athletes has played a crucial role in the team’s success this season.
Austin Hooper, who has been a consistent presence on the field, was unable to participate in practice due to a concussion reportedly sustained during the Patriots’ narrow 28-23 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10. In his second season with New England, Hooper has been on the field for 55.8% of offensive snaps, recording 13 catches for 174 yards and one touchdown. His absence leaves a notable gap, prompting the team to consider elevating either C.J. Dippre or Thomas Odukoya from the practice squad to back up starter Hunter Henry and fullback Jack Westover.
Injury Updates on Key Receivers
Kayshon Boutte, who left the game against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9 due to a hamstring injury, will also miss the upcoming matchup. The sixth-round pick of the 2023 NFL Draft has emerged as a reliable target for quarterback Drake Maye, amassing 23 receptions for 431 yards and five touchdowns prior to his injury. With Boutte officially ruled out, rookie Kyle Williams is expected to step up and fill the void. Williams made headlines in Week 10 with a spectacular 72-yard touchdown reception, marking the longest pass completion of Maye’s career and the Patriots’ longest touchdown of the season.
The receiving corps remains bolstered with options such as Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, and Efton Chism III on the active roster, alongside practice squad players Jeremiah Webb and John Jiles, who could also be called up.
Running Back Situation
Rhamondre Stevenson, who has been dealing with a toe injury since Week 9, will also be absent. Although he participated as an observer in practice, he was ultimately deemed unfit to play against the Jets. Stevenson’s contributions have been vital, and the team will rely on rookie TreVeyon Henderson and practice squad elevation D’Ernest Johnson to help cover his absence. Veteran running back Terrell Jennings is also listed as questionable due to a knee issue.
Defensive Challenges
On the defensive side, linebacker Christian Elliss will not suit up after suffering a hip injury late in the second quarter during the Falcons game. At the time of his exit, Elliss led the team with five tackles, showcasing his importance to the defense. He has accumulated 48 tackles, including 22 solo tackles, along with a pass breakup and a forced fumble this season. With Elliss out, New England will look to Jahlani Tavai, Marte Mapu, and Jack Gibbens to step up in his absence.
As the Patriots prepare for their crucial clash against the Jets, the absence of these four key players could significantly impact their game plan. The team will need to dig deep and rely on their depth as they aim to secure another victory.
