Patriots bolster backfield with D’Ernest Johnson ahead of Falcons clash
The New England Patriots are making strategic moves as they prepare for their Week 9 showdown against the Atlanta Falcons. In a surprising yet calculated decision, the Patriots have added veteran running back D’Ernest Johnson to their roster, enhancing their depth at a crucial position.
Johnson’s Journey to Foxborough
D’Ernest Johnson, who was recently let go from the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, has swiftly found a new home in New England. His addition comes just in time for the Patriots’ upcoming game, and he wasted no time integrating into the team. Johnson was present for the first practice of the week and has been assigned jersey number 34, signaling his readiness to contribute.
The 28-year-old running back had a brief stint with the Cardinals, where he was elevated for a game against the Green Bay Packers in Week 7. Unfortunately for Johnson, he logged just one carry for no yards during that appearance, raising questions about his standing within Arizona’s plans. His release may hint at the potential return of Emari Demercado, who is recovering from an ankle injury and could be ready to face the Dallas Cowboys in the same week.
A Solid Track Record
Johnson’s NFL career began in 2019 when he signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent. Over four seasons with the Browns, he played in 64 games, starting two, and accumulated 748 rushing yards on 141 carries, along with three touchdowns. Additionally, he showcased his versatility by catching 31 passes for 229 yards and making significant contributions on special teams with 646 kick return yards.
In March 2023, Johnson joined the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served primarily as a backup to star running back Travis Etienne. His time with the Jaguars saw him rushing for 251 yards on 73 attempts and adding 22 receptions for 236 yards. He also made an impact in the return game, totaling 126 yards on kick returns.
Despite a brief offseason signing with the Baltimore Ravens, Johnson was waived during final roster cuts. After a short stint on the Ravens’ practice squad, he joined the Cardinals on September 29, where he remained until his recent release.
A Diverse Background
Before his NFL career, Johnson played for the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football during its inaugural season in 2019. In eight games with the Apollos, he rushed for 372 yards and added 22 receptions for 220 yards, showcasing his potential as a versatile back.
As the Patriots gear up for their matchup against the Falcons, the addition of D’Ernest Johnson adds depth and experience to their backfield. His ability to step in and contribute could prove invaluable as the team looks to solidify its running game and make a push in the latter half of the season.
