Patriots part ways with training camp standout D.J. James

The New England Patriots are making a surprising move as they waive cornerback D.J. James, a player who had been turning heads during training camp this year. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that James will now head to waivers, marking a significant shift in his journey with the team.

A Rocky Start in the NFL

James entered the league as a sixth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2024. However, his time in Seattle was short-lived, as he was unable to secure a spot on the team’s roster. Subsequently, the Patriots signed him to their practice squad, where he spent the remainder of his rookie season honing his skills and preparing for a potential future with the franchise.

Earning His Place

After signing a futures contract in January, James showcased his abilities throughout the offseason, ultimately earning a place on New England’s initial 53-man roster. This opportunity arose largely due to injuries limiting two cornerbacks during the summer, allowing James to capitalize on the increased playing time. His hard work paid off, earning him a chance to contribute on the field.

Limited Opportunities in the Season Opener

In the Patriots’ season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, James saw limited action, participating in two defensive snaps and five on special teams. While his contributions were minimal, his training camp performance had positioned him as a player to watch heading into the season.

As the Patriots navigate their roster decisions, James’ departure raises questions about their cornerback depth and the implications for their defensive strategy moving forward. The NFL landscape continues to shift, and James will now await his fate on waivers, hoping for another opportunity to prove himself in the league.
