Patriots Strengthen Roster Ahead of Browns Clash
With a crucial Week 8 matchup against the Cleveland Browns looming, the New England Patriots have made last-minute roster adjustments to bolster their depth at running back and safety. Just a day before kickoff, the team announced the elevation of running back Terrell Jennings and safety Richie Grant from their practice squad to the active roster.
Terrell Jennings Steps Up as RB3
This marks the third promotion this season for Jennings, who has been a reliable option for the Patriots. With Antonio Gibson’s status uncertain, Jennings is poised to step into a more significant role. The 24-year-old running back has demonstrated his capability to adapt to Josh McDaniels’ offensive scheme, making him the top choice for the Patriots’ backfield.
In his previous appearances, Jennings has seen limited offensive snaps. During the team’s Week 6 victory over the New Orleans Saints, he participated in just seven plays on special teams. However, last week he made a more substantial impact, logging 18 yards on five carries over nine snaps. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent from Florida A&M, Jennings has been part of the Patriots’ roster since December of the previous season. During his rookie campaign, he played in three games, accumulating 13 carries for 33 yards. His experience, particularly in a run-heavy system, positions him well for this upcoming game.
Richie Grant Provides Safety Depth
Richie Grant’s elevation is particularly notable given the uncertain status of Kyle Dugger, who is questionable for the game due to a knee injury. Dugger did not participate in the team’s last practice and is the only player on the injury report. Grant, a second-round draft pick in 2021, has four seasons of NFL experience, primarily with the Atlanta Falcons. His familiarity with starting duties, including a standout season in 2022 where he recorded 123 tackles, positions him as a valuable asset for the Patriots.
In 2023, Grant continued to perform at a high level, finishing with 103 tackles and several key defensive statistics. Though his role has diminished this season after losing his starting job, his past performance demonstrates that he can step up when needed. Grant’s experience will be crucial if he is called upon to fill Dugger’s shoes, especially in a high-stakes matchup against the Browns.
Looking Ahead
As the Patriots prepare for this pivotal game, the addition of Jennings and Grant underscores their strategic adjustments to enhance their roster. With kickoff approaching at Gillette Stadium, both players will be looking to make an impact and contribute to the team’s efforts in a challenging contest against a formidable opponent.
