Patriots Enhance Practice Squad with Veteran and Rising Star

The New England Patriots have swiftly addressed their practice squad needs ahead of their Week 4 clash against the Carolina Panthers.

Roster Moves Before Key Matchup

In preparation for the upcoming game at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots announced the signings of offensive lineman Royce Newman and tight end Gee Scott Jr. These moves come as the team sought to fill two open spots on their scout team, a strategic necessity as they gear up for the Panthers.

The Patriots are not the only team making roster adjustments; the New York Giants recently signed linebacker Mark Robinson, marking his third elevation from the practice squad, while the Cleveland Browns secured offensive tackle Thayer Munford Jr.

Royce Newman: A Seasoned Addition

Royce Newman brings with him four seasons of NFL experience, having previously played for the Green Bay Packers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 310 pounds, the offensive lineman was originally a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected by the Packers out of the University of Mississippi.

Newman started his career in Green Bay, where he played from 2021 to 2023. After being released at the end of training camp in 2024, he was claimed off waivers by the Buccaneers, contributing to their offensive line throughout the season. Most recently, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals during the offseason but was cut from the roster on August 26.

Gee Scott Jr.: A Promising Prospect

Joining Newman is Gee Scott Jr., a player with significant potential. Scott, a tight end, is known for his athleticism and versatility. His addition to the practice squad reflects the Patriots’ commitment to developing young talent as they navigate the challenges of the season.

The Patriots are now set to continue their preparations for the Panthers, with these two signings expected to bolster their practice squad depth. The team will look to leverage Newman’s experience and Scott’s promise as they aim for success on the field.
