Patrick Johnson: The Eagles’ Rising Pass Rusher Finds New Life
A Fresh Opportunity Awaits
For Patrick Johnson, the journey from a seventh-round draft pick in 2021 to a key contributor for the Philadelphia Eagles has been a testament to resilience and determination. With the team’s depth on the edge now stretched thin, Johnson is poised to seize a moment he has long awaited.
The 25-year-old edge rusher has been honing his skills since his college days at Tulane, where he was a force on the field, racking up impressive numbers with double-digit sacks in both his junior and senior seasons. Johnson recorded 10.5 sacks in 2018 and followed up with 10 in 2020, culminating in a career total of 24.5. Despite this pedigree, he found himself largely overlooked in the NFL until recently.
A Breakthrough Performance
Last week, during a challenging game against the New York Giants, Johnson finally made his mark. Logging 22 snaps at outside linebacker, he achieved his first career sack, showcasing his potential and determination to contribute at a higher level.
“I’m somebody that I don’t take no for an answer,” Johnson said, reflecting on his journey. “I know I belong here, and if I were to retire early without pushing through, that would eat me up inside.” His grit and tenacity have kept him in the league, even as he faced limited opportunities.
Enduring Challenges
In his first three seasons with the Eagles, Johnson struggled to secure a consistent role on defense. Although he made an impact on special teams, his defensive snap counts were modest. The highlight came during a meaningless regular-season finale against the Cowboys, where he played 55 snaps – his highest total to date.
Yet, Johnson remained undeterred. “I tell people all the time, everybody wants to pop off early in their careers,” he explained. “But if you look at some guys around the league, their careers really take off in Year 5, Year 6.” With hope, he aims for a similar trajectory, believing that his moment is finally within reach.
Eagles’ Edge Rushing Dilemma
The current landscape of the Eagles’ roster presents an opening for Johnson. With key players like Nolan Smith and Ogbo Okoronkwo sidelined due to injuries, and Za’Darius Smith having retired, the pass-rushing corps is in need of depth.
“I know I can make several plays,” Johnson stated confidently. “I feel I can showcase that week in and week out.” His eagerness to contribute is palpable as he prepares to step up in the absence of his teammates.
Inspired by Teammates
Johnson credits his perseverance to the influence of veteran players such as Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett, who exemplify the hard work and dedication necessary to succeed in the league. He also lauds his position coach, Jeremiah Washburn, for believing in his potential.
“He’s been my guy since Year 2,” Johnson shared. “He told me, ‘Pat, you’re a freaking player. I believe in you. Just keep going, and your time is going to come.’ That’s what I’m hoping to do.”
As the Eagles look to rebound and solidify their defensive line, all eyes will be on Patrick Johnson. With a renewed opportunity, he stands ready to transform his potential into production, proving that sometimes, patience and perseverance are the keys to success in the NFL.
