Packers’ playoff hopes rocked as LaFleur battles key player rest dilemma against Vikings

Packers Face Crucial Decisions Ahead of Vikings Showdown

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers entered last week’s matchup against the Chicago Bears with aspirations of winning the NFC North and securing the coveted No. 2 seed in the playoffs. However, those hopes have been dashed after a disappointing loss to the Bears, followed by a heavy defeat at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night. Now, as they prepare for their Week 18 clash against the Minnesota Vikings—set for noon Sunday and broadcast on CBS—the stakes have shifted dramatically. Win, lose, or tie, the Packers will be locked in as the No. 7 seed, facing the No. 2 seed in the opening round of the playoffs.

Yet, this game carries significant implications for the Packers beyond mere playoff positioning. The team is currently on a three-game losing streak, and Coach Matt LaFleur is grappling with whether to rest key players or push them to compete against the Vikings.

LaFleur Addresses Player Resting Reports

LaFleur firmly denied reports from ESPN suggesting that the Packers planned to rest significant players in the upcoming game. “I would say we’ve had some early discussions in regards to what route we’re going to do, and I’ll be able to update you guys later in the week,” he stated on Sunday, a day after the 41-24 loss to Baltimore. “But, despite what has been reported potentially, nothing’s been decided.” This decision weighs heavily on LaFleur as he navigates the challenges of a faltering team seeking to regain its footing.

Should the Stars Shine or Sit?

The Packers, currently lacking momentum, are faced with a pivotal choice: should they play their top athletes against the Vikings? Winning could provide a much-needed boost for a squad in a downward spiral. Historical context adds weight to this decision. In 2020, the Packers secured the No. 1 seed with a last-minute victory over Chicago, which propelled them into the playoffs, only to fall short against Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship Game. Similarly, in 2021, with the top seed already in hand, Aaron Rodgers played part of a Week 18 game against Detroit, but the Packers were eliminated in the playoffs by the 49ers.

This season’s narrative is complex. The Packers secured a playoff spot with a victory in last year’s Week 18, which set the stage for a wildcard triumph in Dallas, followed by a narrow defeat in San Francisco. “Everything factors in,” LaFleur acknowledged. “We’ll make the decision that we feel is best moving forward. Regardless of anything, whether you rest certain individuals, you’re kind of limited, especially our situation right now with the number of injuries that occurred.”

Managing Player Health and Performance

This isn’t a preseason game with a full roster; the Packers must balance player health against the need for competitive performance. With only two practice squad players eligible for elevation, LaFleur’s decisions will be critical. Quarterback Jordan Love, recently recovering from a concussion, may be a candidate for rest. Right tackle Zach Tom has missed the last two games with a knee issue, while running back Josh Jacobs has been battling through his own knee injury for weeks.

“I’ll let you know as soon as we have those conversations,” LaFleur commented when asked about Jacobs’ status. “Certainly, I’d like to talk with our players before I put anything out publicly.” The injury report looms large in the minds of both the coaching staff and players, particularly after last season’s misfortunes when the Packers faced significant injuries heading into the playoffs.

Learning from Past Experiences

Reflecting on previous seasons, LaFleur has acknowledged the lessons learned from past playoff disappointments. Last year, the Packers were firmly established as the No. 7 seed but suffered key injuries right before their wildcard game against the Eagles. “I think you’re learning from past experiences, and certainly it was a tough lesson a year ago in regards to what we lost going into the wildcard round,” LaFleur noted. “There’s a lot of variables that get thrown into play. I know a lot of people have different opinions on what is the best route, and ultimately, we’ve got to make the best decision for us.”

Injuries Pile Up

The Packers are also dealing with injuries sustained in their recent game against the Ravens. Cornerback Kamal Hadden and defensive tackle Jordon Riley are both out for the season due to significant injuries. LaFleur remains uncertain about the nature of other injuries incurred during the game. Backup quarterback Malik Willis, who had been sidelined with a shoulder injury, is expected to be available, providing some relief to the team’s depth as they approach the playoffs.

As the Packers prepare for their final regular-season contest, the weight of decision-making rests heavily on LaFleur’s shoulders. The outcome against the Vikings could shape their trajectory as they head into the postseason, making it a crucial moment in their campaign.
