Packers’ near miss with Bengals’ sack leader Hendrickson before landing Parsons in shocking trade twist

Packers Eye Hendrickson Before Securing Parsons in Unexpected Trade

The Green Bay Packers found themselves in an intriguing situation this offseason as they explored a potential blockbuster trade for Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson. According to reports, discussions between the two franchises took place prior to Green Bay’s significant acquisition of Micah Parsons, a move that showcased their shifting priorities.

Bengals Open to Trade Talks

As the offseason progressed, the Bengals permitted Hendrickson to explore trade possibilities. This decision opened the door for multiple teams, including the Packers, to express interest in the star pass rusher, renowned for his impressive sack tally. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network highlighted that Green Bay was among the most engaged teams in discussions regarding Hendrickson.

The Packers reportedly made an initial offer for the NFL’s sack leader, indicating their serious interest in bolstering their defensive line. However, the trade never materialized. The Bengals, reluctant to part with Hendrickson, maintained a firm stance, which complicated negotiations.

Kenny Clark’s Involvement in Trade Talks

A noteworthy aspect of the proposed trade was the involvement of standout defensive tackle Kenny Clark. Rapoport revealed that Clark would have been part of the deal, but the Packers were unwilling to let him go at that stage. Given Clark’s value to the team and the Bengals’ insistence on a significant return, including a mid-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the trade discussions ultimately fizzled out.

To keep Hendrickson satisfied amid the trade talks, the Bengals opted to increase his salary by $14 million this season. This decision allowed them to retain their defensive cornerstone, with Hendrickson still slated to enter free agency after this year.

Packers Pivot to Parsons

In a twist of fate, the Packers shifted their focus away from Hendrickson and directed their efforts toward securing Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys. The deal involved sending Clark along with two first-round picks to Dallas, a bold move that underscored Green Bay’s commitment to strengthening their defensive unit.

Parsons, a highly regarded edge rusher, is expected to make his debut with the Packers in the upcoming week. The Packers’ decision to pivot to Parsons reflects their adaptability in the face of trade negotiations that did not pan out as initially envisioned.

As the season unfolds, Hendrickson will continue to lead the Bengals’ defense, starting this Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Meanwhile, the Packers’ bold trade for Parsons could reshape their defensive strategy as they seek to make their mark in the league.
