Packers Navigate Injury Challenges Ahead of Commanders Matchup

The Green Bay Packers find themselves in a tight spot as they prepare to face the Washington Commanders on a short week. With an overwhelming 13-7 tally on the injury report, the team is grappling with significant player absences that could impact their offensive line.

Offensive Line Depth Tested

Following their hard-fought victory over the Detroit Lions, the Packers had a day off for practice on Tuesday, leaving them with crucial decisions to make. Right tackle Zach Tom is dealing with an oblique injury, while left guard Aaron Banks is sidelined with both ankle and groin issues. If neither player can return by Thursday, it opens the door for Jordan Morgan to step in at left guard and Darian Kinnard to take over at right tackle.

Tom’s potential absence is particularly concerning, given his pivotal role in neutralizing Lions standout Aidan Hutchinson during their last matchup. Jordan Love, the Packers’ quarterback, acknowledged the uncertainty but expressed confidence in the remaining offensive linemen. “We’ve got to get those guys as many reps in these walkthroughs and things like that – hearing the calls, knowing the calls,” Love stated. “These guys are all pros. I’ve got confidence in them that they’ll be able to go out there and do their job and execute at a high level.”

Kinnard’s Opportunity for Growth

Darian Kinnard, who joined the Packers from the Eagles at the end of training camp, has shown promise in his limited appearances. After playing well in 15 snaps against Detroit, he may be called upon to make his second career start. Kinnard is focused on grasping the finer points of the playbook. “There’s always the small details, the small nuances in any playbook you’re trying to learn,” he noted, emphasizing his dedication to improving.

Injury Report Overview

The Packers’ injury report reflects a challenging week ahead, with 13 players listed compared to the Commanders’ seven. Notably, four players did not participate in practice: defensive end Brenton Cox (groin), cornerback Bo Melton (shoulder), left guard Aaron Banks, and right tackle Zach Tom. Meanwhile, receiver Jayden Reed (foot) and linebacker Quay Walker (quad) would have been limited participants had there been practice, although Reed recently contributed significantly to the team’s success with three receptions, including a touchdown, against Detroit.

Reed expressed his relief following the win, despite feeling some discomfort. “I’m definitely hurting a little bit, but thank God we got some time to recover,” he said. He plans to ice his foot in hopes of a quicker recovery.

Quarterback Health and Preparation

Quarterback Jordan Love, who has been managing a thumb issue, participated fully in practice. When asked about his health status, he simply stated, “I feel good.” Reflecting on his improved condition compared to last season, Love shared, “That’s very fun and a good feeling when you’re not dealing with things like I was last year.” He remains aware that the rigors of the season will bring their own challenges.

Focus on Rehabilitation

Defensive end Micah Parsons, also dealing with a back issue, was limited in practice for the second straight day. After logging 30 snaps against the Lions, Parsons emphasized the importance of trusting the training staff and maintaining a rigorous rehabilitation routine. “Yeah, it’s just all about just trusting the trainers, doing your rehab, everything you can do to make sure you’re ready,” he said.

Additionally, receiver Savion Williams, who missed nearly all of the preseason due to injury, is notably absent from this week’s report, indicating a positive shift in his recovery.
