Packers face tough challenge against Commanders as injuries mount

The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for a pivotal matchup against the Washington Commanders on Thursday night, but they do so with a lengthy injury report that could significantly impact their performance. With key starters’ statuses uncertain, the team is bracing for a battle that could test their depth.

Injury Report Overview

The final injury report reveals a total of seven players dealing with various ailments, placing a spotlight on the health of the offensive line. Right tackle Zach Tom and left guard Aaron Banks are both listed as questionable, having not practiced this week due to an oblique and ankle/groin injuries, respectively. Head coach Matt LaFleur acknowledged the situation, stating, “We’ll give them all the way up to gametime to see where they’re at. Certainly, two guys that have a lot of experience. We’ll just see where we’re at.”

In addition to Tom and Banks, defensive end Micah Parsons (back), cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee), and safety Zayne Anderson (knee) are also questionable, having participated in limited practice sessions throughout the week. Hobbs, who missed the previous game due to a surgical procedure on his knee, would have been a key contributor had he been healthy. Parsons made his debut last week, logging 30 snaps, and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley expressed hope for increased playing time, emphasizing the need to manage his ramp-up carefully.

Challenges on the Offensive Line

The absence of both Tom and Banks would leave the Packers facing one of the league’s top defenses without two-fifths of their starting offensive line. Should they be unable to suit up, the team could resort to Jordan Morgan at left guard and Darian Kinnard at right tackle, adjustments made during last week’s game against Detroit. Morgan, a former first-round pick, has seen limited action with just one career start, while Kinnard, drafted in the fifth round, has also had minimal experience, appearing in four games.

Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich praised their performances against the Lions, stating, “They went out there and competed. They kept us going. Kept us efficient and did a nice job.” Kinnard, reflecting on his transition from the Eagles, noted, “It was a good opportunity. I came here for a fresh start and just came in head down, just ready to work.”

Short Week Challenges

LaFleur, who holds a 5-3 record in Thursday night games, acknowledged the unique challenges posed by short weeks. “A lot of it is just are you hurt by injuries. That’s a big deal in these Thursday night games,” he said. The Packers prepared for the Commanders by establishing a game plan during training camp, but limited film from earlier weeks can complicate their adjustments.

Commanders Injury Update

On the other side, the Commanders also have concerns, with punter Tress Way (back) and defensive end Deatrich Wise (knee) listed as questionable after limited participation in practice.
