Odell Beckham Jr. Remains in the Game: Should the Saints Take a Chance on the Veteran Wide Receiver?

Odell Beckham Jr. has made it clear that he has no intention of retiring from the NFL, raising questions about his potential fit with the New Orleans Saints. As the Saints continue to build their roster, the prospect of bringing in the seasoned wide receiver could be an intriguing option.

Saints’ Recent Moves in the Receiver Market

In recent months, the New Orleans Saints have been active in acquiring wide receivers, signaling a commitment to bolster their offensive depth. The team added Devaughn Vele from the Denver Broncos and Ja’Lynn Polk from the New England Patriots, though Polk is currently sidelined for the season. Despite being 0-2, the Saints possess a promising receiving corps featuring Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Brandin Cooks, Vele, and Mason Tipton.

However, the team’s injury woes have impacted their depth. With Trey Palmer listed as questionable and both Polk and Bub Means on Injured Reserve, the Saints may find themselves in a position where adding another receiver could provide valuable support.

Beckham’s Determination to Keep Playing

In a recent interview with “Complex,” Beckham addressed retirement rumors directly, stating, “Retiring is not happening. I just came from the gym. This is the first time in a long time I can, like, pop up out of bed or if a dog was about to chase me I could take off running. I’m good. And I know I could play in the league right now.”

The veteran receiver emphasized his desire to contribute meaningfully on a team, saying, “I’m not looking to be someone’s No. 1 wide receiver and get 15 targets. Like, bro I know the game. I get how it goes… I just want to play ball on a good team where I have a role, where I got five, six, seven plays where I get the chance to catch… I just want to play ball, finish off my legacy for myself.”

Beckham’s Recent Performance

At 32 years old, Beckham’s career has seen its share of ups and downs. Last season with the Miami Dolphins, he appeared in nine games, tallying 55 receiving yards. The year prior, he played 14 games, finishing with 35 catches for 565 yards and three touchdowns. Notably, he delivered a standout performance against the Cincinnati Bengals, racking up 116 receiving yards.

While Beckham may not be the explosive player he once was, his recent performance indicates that he still possesses the ability to be a valuable asset on the field.

Should the Saints Make the Move?

While the Saints may not be in dire need of another wide receiver, their current 0-2 record may prompt them to consider all available options. Adding Beckham could provide an experienced presence and an opportunity for him to showcase his skills in a meaningful role.

The Saints have an opportunity to explore the potential benefits of signing Beckham, especially as they navigate injuries and seek to turn their season around. With his desire to contribute and the Saints’ need for depth, it might be worth seeing what the veteran wideout can bring to the team.
