Nik Needham Returns to AFC East with Jets Practice Squad Signing

A significant wave of NFL transactions has unfolded recently, spotlighting several former Miami Dolphins players. Among them is cornerback Nik Needham, who has found a new opportunity with the New York Jets after an impressive showing in a recent tryout.

Needham’s Journey Back to the NFL

Nik Needham’s path in the NFL is nothing short of inspiring. After starting his career as an undrafted rookie free agent, he carved out a place on the Miami Dolphins’ 53-man roster, spending six productive seasons in Miami. Following his release from the Cleveland Browns, Needham sought a fresh start, and his perseverance paid off when he secured a spot on the Jets’ practice squad.

In a competitive tryout that featured eight defensive backs, Needham emerged victorious, showcasing his skills and resilience. This new chapter could see him squaring off against his former team in the near future, adding an intriguing layer to his transition within the AFC East.

Davis’s Positive Tryout with Giants

While Nik Needham has landed a new role, defensive tackle Raekwon Davis’s situation remains in flux. Although he did not sign with a team on Tuesday, his recent tryout with the New York Giants is a positive indicator of his potential return to the league. Davis was released by the Indianapolis Colts earlier this offseason due to a non-football-related illness, following a challenging stint marred by blood clot issues that cost him most of last summer’s training camp.

The fact that he is receiving tryout opportunities suggests he may have received medical clearance to resume his career. However, the Giants’ roster moves also saw veteran linebacker Neville Hewitt join their practice squad, while 2024 draft pick Patrick McMorris was released to accommodate him.

Mike White and Shaq Lawson Seek Resurgence

Quarterback Mike White, previously released by the Buffalo Bills, has found a new home on the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad. This move comes in the wake of Joe Burrow being placed on injured reserve due to a toe injury, thrusting Jake Browning into the starting role. The Bengals are set to face the Miami Dolphins in a much-anticipated matchup later this season.

Meanwhile, defensive end Shaq Lawson, who had a brief stint with the Dolphins before a trade, is also trying to make a comeback. Lawson recently auditioned for the Seattle Seahawks after a lack of team affiliation since being released from the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad last October.

Rookie Free Agents Getting Opportunities

In addition to these notable names, two rookie free agents who participated in Dolphins training camp are also making strides. Wide receiver Andrew Armstrong had a tryout with the Detroit Lions, while guard Addison West showcased his talents with the Minnesota Vikings.

These developments highlight the ever-changing nature of the NFL landscape, where former Dolphins players are actively seeking opportunities to revitalize their careers while navigating the challenges of professional football.
