New York Giants crisis as injuries devastate lineup ahead of Las Vegas showdown

Giants Hit Hard by Injuries Ahead of Crucial Matchup Against Raiders

The New York Giants are gearing up for a challenging Week 17 clash against the Las Vegas Raiders, but they will do so with a significantly weakened roster. As the team heads to Las Vegas, they will be without three starters and a crucial reserve, a situation that could profoundly impact their performance on the field.

Key Absences

The Giants announced that defensive lineman D.J. Davidson (neck/concussion), left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring), tight end Theo Johnson (illness), and center John Michael Schmitz (finger) will not make the trip, effectively ruling them out for Sunday’s matchup. This news comes on the heels of receiver Beaux Collins (neck/concussion), offensive lineman Evan Neal (neck), and safety Tyler Nubin (neck) also being sidelined, having been declared out on Friday.

Thomas and Davidson’s statuses were confirmed on Friday, while Schmitz, initially listed as doubtful, was unable to practice throughout the week and ultimately did not recover in time to participate. Johnson, who was added to the injury report just a day before, also could not make sufficient progress to be ready.

Next Man Up

With this string of injuries, the Giants will rely on Daniel Bellinger and Chris Manhertz to shoulder the tight end responsibilities. In light of Johnson’s absence, the team has the option to elevate Zach Davidson or Maximillan Mang from the practice squad to provide further depth at the position.

The injury crisis has prompted speculation about potential roster moves before the 4 p.m. deadline. One avenue the Giants may pursue involves activating offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu from injured reserve. Ezeudu, who has been practicing fully this week, carries a questionable designation. However, activating him would require a corresponding roster move, likely placing Thomas on IR to free up a spot.

Defensive Line Adjustments

The Giants’ defensive line is also facing uncertainty, particularly with Rakeem Nunez-Roches listed as questionable. Given this situation, the team is expected to add another defensive lineman, presumably Elijah Chatman, to the roster. Chatman has already been elevated from the practice squad three times this season, meaning he would need to be signed to the 53-man roster, which would also necessitate clearing a spot for him.

A Battle for Draft Position

As both the Giants and Raiders navigate injuries and uncertainty, the stakes for this weekend’s game extend beyond mere pride. The outcome could play a crucial role in determining which team secures the first overall pick in the 2026 draft. Kickoff is set for 4:05 p.m. ET, and fans will be eagerly watching to see how the undermanned Giants respond in this pivotal matchup.
