New Orleans Saints’ Roster Turmoil: Quick Cuts and Swift Returns

The New Orleans Saints have been making headlines this week with a flurry of activity surrounding their practice squad. On Tuesday, the franchise confirmed the addition of cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. to their practice squad while simultaneously parting ways with wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. and offensive tackle Barry Wesley.

Roster Moves Announced

Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis detailed these transactions, stating, “The club has signed CB Beanie Bishop Jr. to the practice squad and terminated the practice squad contract of RB Ian Wheeler. In addition, the club also waived WR Kevin Austin Jr. and T Barry Wesley.”

This reshuffling comes amid the Saints’ ongoing efforts to fine-tune their roster as they prepare for the final stretch of the regular season.

Rapid Reinstatement

However, the roster decisions proved to be short-lived. Just two days later, reports surfaced indicating that Austin and Wesley were brought back into the fold. According to Audacy Sports’ Jeff Nowak, “Saints have signed WR Kevin Austin and OL Barry Wesley to the practice squad.”

For Wesley, this season has been more about preparation than participation; he has yet to see game action in the NFL. Nevertheless, maintaining depth on the offensive line is crucial, especially as injuries can strike at any moment.

Austin’s Season in Perspective

Austin, on the other hand, has seen some action this season, taking the field for three games. Despite being targeted once, he has yet to register a catch, logging just 37 offensive snaps and five on special teams. Last season, he had a more significant impact, participating in eight games, including two starts, where he recorded 11 receptions on 22 targets for 151 yards.

Constant Evolution on the Practice Squad

As the Saints prepare to clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday, the practice squad continues to resemble a revolving door. While these roster changes may not significantly shift the team’s fortunes, they do bolster depth as the Saints eye a crucial matchup.

The unpredictable nature of roster management is a hallmark of the NFL, particularly as teams navigate the challenges of the season. For Austin and Wesley, this week has been a stark reminder of the fluid dynamics at play within the league.
