New England Patriots eyeing sensational Matthew Judon reunion after Miami Dolphins release
FOXBOROUGH, MA.
Could a beloved former player be making a return to New England? The Miami Dolphins have reportedly released veteran pass rusher Matthew Judon, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garofalo. The four-time Pro Bowler, who spent the last season with Miami, has become a potential target for playoff contenders seeking a seasoned presence on the defensive front.
Judon has yet to indicate that a reunion with the Patriots is on the horizon. However, the thought of seeing him back in New England, sporting his iconic “red sleeves,” is more than a whimsical daydream for fans. His tenure in Foxborough, which began in the 2021 offseason and concluded with his departure in August 2024, solidified his status as one of the franchise’s standout defensive players.
Judon’s Impact in New England
The 33-year-old defender was a linchpin for the Patriots during his time with the team. He showcased an impressive blend of versatility and tenacity, securing his position as New England’s primary edge rusher. Judon’s keen on-field awareness allowed him to stymie running plays on the perimeter and apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
In his inaugural season with the Patriots, Judon recorded 60 tackles, one fumble recovery, and an impressive 12.5 sacks. His performance only improved in 2022, as he set a career-high with 15.5 sacks, forced two fumbles (recovering one), and maintained his tackle count at 60.
A Disrupted 2023 Season
Unfortunately, Judon’s 2023 campaign was marred by injury. A torn bicep suffered in Week 4 against the Dallas Cowboys cut his season short. However, in those four games, he showcased his capability, leading the Patriots with nine quarterback hits, four sacks, five tackles for loss, and even a safety.
Despite a tumultuous 4-13 season for the Patriots, the defense maintained a degree of competitiveness. Yet, it was evident that the pass rush lacked the same ferocity without Judon in the lineup, underscoring his vital role on the team.
A New Chapter?
The circumstances surrounding Judon’s exit from New England were less than ideal. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons amid a relatively amicable offseason contract dispute just before the conclusion of the 2024 training camp.
As the Patriots contemplate their next moves, the prospect of bringing back a player of Judon’s caliber could prove to be a game-changer. While nothing has been confirmed, the potential for a reunion is certainly an exciting possibility for both the team and its loyal fan base.
