Nazir Stackhouse Set for Major Opportunity as Packers Prepare for Lions
The Green Bay Packers are gearing up for a significant matchup against the Detroit Lions, and one of their undrafted free agents, Nazir Stackhouse, is primed to step into a crucial role. While the team’s success with undrafted players has been a mixed bag in recent years, Stackhouse stands out as a promising talent who has made the 53-man roster, continuing the Packers’ remarkable streak of having at least one undrafted player on the roster for 21 consecutive seasons.
Undrafted Challenges and Opportunities
Despite Stackhouse’s achievement, the Packers’ undrafted free agent class as a whole has struggled to make a substantial impact. Last year, the streak was preserved largely due to a waiver claim for kicker Brayden Narveson. This year, the team signed 14 college free agents, but Stackhouse emerged as the sole survivor of that group. With a success rate of just 7.1%, the Packers ranked among the lowest in the league, particularly within the NFC North.
However, the Packers are hoping for quality over quantity this season. With the departure of Kenny Clark, who was traded to Dallas, and TJ Slaton signing with the Bengals, Stackhouse’s role in the defensive line becomes vital. He is expected to help fortify the run defense starting this Sunday against the Lions.
Facing the Trade Fallout
Reflecting on the impact of Clark’s trade, Stackhouse shared his surprise upon learning the news. “When we all figured out that Micah was probably going to come here, I was questioning, ‘I wonder who they’re trading.’ And then my phone blew up, and it was Kenny,” Stackhouse recalled. The departure of a player of Clark’s caliber resonates deeply within the locker room. Stackhouse acknowledged Clark’s influence, stating, “He had such an impact on the guys on the team… But we all know the task at hand.”
With Clark’s nine-season tenure in Green Bay, which included 126 starts, the pressure is on Stackhouse to step up. The current depth chart features players who collectively have only started six games. In contrast, Stackhouse brings significant experience from his time at Georgia, where he was a starter for 42 games.
A Rising Star Among Veterans
Defensive end Rashan Gary is optimistic about Stackhouse’s potential. “He’s very consistent. He doesn’t like messing up, and when he does get a coaching point, it’s incredible how he can implement it immediately,” Gary said. The camaraderie within the team is evident as Stackhouse earns respect for his work ethic and dedication.
Unlike Gary, who was a first-round pick in 2019 and played limited snaps in his debut, Stackhouse and fellow rookie Warren Brinson, a sixth-round pick, are expected to see much more action against the Lions.
Embracing the Challenge Ahead
Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley expressed confidence in the young players. “I thought they played well in the preseason… now we’ll see what they can do on Sunday,” he remarked. Hafley understands that the journey will not be without its challenges. “Like anybody else in this league, you’re going to have to go through some adversity… I think they have a chance to be really good players.”
Among the undrafted free agents, Stackhouse is one of four who received over $100,000 in guaranteed money from the Packers. While some of his peers have moved to the practice squad, Stackhouse remains a key part of the team. The Packers’ approach to undrafted players emphasizes opportunity, something that general manager Brian Gutekunst believes sets them apart.
The Packers’ Commitment to Undrafted Players
Gutekunst highlighted the team’s dedication to giving undrafted free agents a fair chance. “We have a tremendous history with our undrafted free agents… players come here, they’re going to get an opportunity,” he explained. This commitment resonates within the community, assuring them that local talent will receive a proper chance to succeed.
As the Packers prepare for their clash with the Lions, all eyes will be on Stackhouse. His journey from undrafted free agent to a starting role in a pivotal game underscores not only his personal growth but also the Packers’ ongoing legacy of embracing talent regardless of draft status. The stage is set for Stackhouse to showcase his abilities and contribute to the team’s aspirations this season.
