Nakobe Dean Eager for More Defensive Action with Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles welcomed back an essential piece of their Super Bowl-winning defense last week, but linebacker Nakobe Dean had a brief stint on the field, playing just six snaps, all on special teams. His desire, however, extends far beyond that limited role.
A Limited Return
When asked about the six snaps he played, Dean couldn’t hide his amusement. “No, I didn’t expect to play six special teams snaps,” he remarked, reflecting on his activation from the PUP list just hours before the game against the New York Giants. He anticipated a more significant role on defense, particularly as the Eagles prepare to face the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday.
“When you’re back, you want to play as much as you can,” Dean expressed. “I feel my body, and in my mind, I was ready to play every snap on defense. I’ll do whatever I have to for this defense to be the best it can be.” His return is crucial, as his presence strengthens the Eagles’ linebacker corps.
The Importance of Caution
While Dean is enthusiastic about contributing, the Eagles may have been cautious in his first game back following a serious knee injury—specifically, a torn patellar tendon he suffered during the playoffs last January. Special teams coordinator Michael Clay acknowledged Dean’s eagerness to contribute, noting, “For a guy to have that severe of an injury, his first game back, you feel the energy, and he wants to go out there and contribute in any way he can.”
His time on special teams did include a notable moment when he executed a successful trap block on a kickoff return. Clay emphasized the positive impact of Dean’s energy and presence on the team, reinforcing that his contributions extend beyond mere statistics.
Navigating Competitive Dynamics
Dean’s return also brings a layer of complexity to the Eagles’ linebacker situation. Rookie Jihaad Campbell has been stepping up alongside Zack Baun, even taking on edge rushing responsibilities. This development could provide the Eagles with the flexibility to accommodate Dean’s desire for a more significant defensive role.
“They know how I feel,” Dean stated when discussing his communication with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and the coaching staff. “I’m itching to play. I’m itching to get back out there and play more and more and more. But I can only control what I can control. If they wanted me to play every snap, I want to play every snap.”
Emotional Return
Despite his limited playing time, Dean expressed gratitude for simply being back on the field after months of rehabilitation. “As much as I wanted to play more, it was great being back out there in pads,” he shared. The emotional weight of his return resonated deeply, especially when he saw his mother in the stands, beaming with pride at his perseverance through adversity.
Dean’s passion and commitment to the Eagles are palpable as he prepares for the upcoming game. With his sights set on contributing meaningfully to the defense, fans can expect him to make an impact as he continues to regain his rhythm on the field.
