Vikings’ Flight Drama Delays Arrival for Giants Clash
The Minnesota Vikings are facing an unexpected delay as they make their way to New Jersey for their upcoming matchup against the New York Giants. Shortly after takeoff, the team’s flight encountered mechanical issues, prompting a return to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
In a statement released Saturday, the Vikings acknowledged that the plane “experienced mechanical issues” that necessitated the turnaround. The team is now in the process of boarding a second aircraft, with plans to arrive at Newark International Airport “later tonight.”
Nature of the Mechanical Issues
While specifics about the mechanical problems remain scarce, former Vikings player and current KFAN broadcaster Ben Leber shed some light on the situation via Instagram. He reported that the landing gear hatch failed to close properly, which contributed to the decision to return. Radar data indicated that the flight made its U-turn near Madison, Wisconsin.
According to Flight Aware, the new departure time is now set for 6:52 p.m. CT, approximately three-and-a-half hours later than originally planned. The revised arrival time at Newark is estimated to be around 9:50 p.m. ET, adding to the team’s travel woes.
Game Day Expectations
The Vikings will arrive in New Jersey with a 6-8 record, buoyed by back-to-back victories against the Washington Commanders and the Dallas Cowboys. They are set to take on the struggling Giants, who sit at 2-12 and have endured a disheartening eight-game losing streak.
Despite both teams being out of playoff contention, there is still plenty at stake. Each squad will aim to develop its young quarterback: J.J. McCarthy for the Vikings and Jaxson Dart for the Giants. The game is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., as both teams look to end their seasons on a positive note.
