Minnesota Vikings face Green Bay Packers with high stakes for draft pick position

Date:

Vikings and Packers Clash with Draft Implications

As the National Football League wraps up its regular season, the Minnesota Vikings are set to face the Green Bay Packers in a game that carries significant weight for both teams, though for starkly different reasons. The Week 18 showdown will kick off at 12 p.m. CT from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. While the Packers find themselves locked into the No. 7 seed, the Vikings are striving to end their season on a high note, aiming for a five-game winning streak.

Packers’ Playoff Positioning

For Green Bay, the stakes are somewhat minimal. They have already secured their playoff berth, but their fate in the postseason hinges on the outcomes of other games. The only question remaining is their Wild Card Weekend destination, which will either be Chicago or Philadelphia, depending on the standings of those teams vying for the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.

Vikings’ Draft Dilemma

Conversely, the Vikings are facing a critical juncture regarding their draft positioning. With a potential final record of either 9-8 or 8-9, their standing in the draft could significantly shift based on the outcome of this game against the Packers. If Minnesota secures a victory, they could land the 18th pick— the lowest possible selection for a non-playoff team—providing they also get help from other games. Specifically, a Colts loss at Houston and a Pittsburgh victory over Baltimore would solidify their draft position.

Should the Vikings falter and finish 8-9, their fate would be determined by several other key matchups involving teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (currently 7-9), Dallas Cowboys (7-8-1), Detroit Lions (8-8), Baltimore Ravens (8-8), and Carolina Panthers (8-8). The results of these games will dictate whether Minnesota lands between the 13th and 18th picks in the draft.

Key Games to Watch

As the Vikings navigate this critical game, several other matchups will play a pivotal role in shaping their draft position:

Carolina at Tampa Bay (3:30 p.m. Saturday)
Dallas at New York Giants (12 p.m.)
Indianapolis at Houston (12 p.m.)
Detroit at Chicago (3:25 p.m.)
Baltimore at Pittsburgh (7:20 p.m.)

For Minnesota to achieve the highest possible draft pick, they would need to lose against the Packers, while the Buccaneers, Cowboys, Colts, Lions, and Ravens all secure victories. In this scenario, the Vikings, Panthers, and Buccaneers would all finish 8-9, but the Buccaneers would clinch the NFC South, forcing a tiebreaker based on strength of schedule. The Vikings enter Week 18 with a strength of schedule of .515, compared to .520 for the Panthers.

Additionally, the Miami Dolphins could also end the season at 8-9 with a win over New England. However, their weaker strength of schedule means they would pick ahead of the Vikings in a tiebreaker.

Playoff Picture Beyond Minnesota

While the Vikings and Packers grapple with their own challenges, the playoff picture in both the NFC and AFC remains fluid. In the AFC, the Denver Broncos can clinch the top seed with a victory over the Chargers. New England can also secure the number one spot with a win against Miami, provided Denver also loses. Jacksonville has a chance to earn the top seed if they defeat the Titans while other teams stumble.

In the NFC, the top seed will be determined by the outcome of the Saturday night clash between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. The Rams, meanwhile, are guaranteed the No. 5 seed and cannot win the NFC West.

With four divisions still up for grabs, the stakes are high across the league. The AFC North is a battle between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, the AFC South hinges on Jacksonville or Houston, while the NFC West is contested by Seattle and San Francisco, and the NFC South can be claimed by either Carolina or Tampa Bay.

As the final regular season games unfold, all eyes will be on the Vikings and Packers, where both teams have much at stake, albeit for vastly different outcomes.
