Vikings Enhance Quarterback Depth with Desmond Ridder Amid Injury Concerns for J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings have made a strategic move to bolster their quarterback lineup following the unfortunate ankle injury sustained by J.J. McCarthy. The promising second-year quarterback is anticipated to be sidelined for several weeks, prompting the Vikings to secure additional depth at the position. Carson Wentz is expected to step in as the starter during this critical stretch.

Desmond Ridder Joins the Roster

In a significant development, the Vikings signed Desmond Ridder on Tuesday afternoon. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Ridder will be added directly to the 53-man roster, marking a quick transition for the former Atlanta Falcon. His inclusion on the active roster means he will surpass undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who is likely to remain on the practice squad for now.

Ridder, who entered the NFL as a third-round selection in the 2022 Draft, has already accumulated valuable experience. In his rookie season, he started four games for the Falcons, finishing with a 2-2 record. His second year saw a considerable increase in responsibility as he started 13 games, recording a 6-7 record with 12 touchdown passes against 12 interceptions.

Career Stats and Performance Insights

After his tenure with the Falcons, Ridder’s journey continued with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024, where he made one start but did not secure a victory. Over the course of his NFL career, he holds an 8-10 record as a starter. His completion percentage stands at 63.6%, coupled with a total of 16 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions.

Additionally, Ridder has showcased his mobility, accumulating 293 rushing yards and five touchdowns across 78 carries. His ability to make plays with his legs adds an extra dimension to his skill set, despite the ups and downs that have marked his career thus far.

A Timely Addition for the Vikings

The Vikings are undoubtedly relieved to have Ridder available, especially given their need for experienced quarterback play in McCarthy’s absence. With Wentz stepping in as the primary starter, Ridder’s presence on the roster provides a reliable backup option, ensuring the team can maintain its competitive edge during this challenging period.

As the Vikings navigate this pivotal moment in their season, the addition of Ridder not only enhances their quarterback depth but also injects a sense of stability into their offensive strategy.
