Michael Penix Jr. Optimistic as He Begins Challenging Rehab with Falcons
Week 17 signifies a pivotal moment for Michael Penix Jr., marking six weeks since he suffered a knee injury in a game against the Carolina Panthers. Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris recently shared an encouraging update regarding the quarterback’s recovery journey.
“Back with us. Rehabbing. In the building. Great spirits. Starting his offseason planning,” Morris reported, highlighting Penix’s positive attitude despite the challenges ahead. The end-of-season evaluations, referred to as a “360,” are critical for every player, allowing them to review their performance and set goals for the offseason. For Penix, however, the focus is primarily on his rehabilitation and medical recovery.
Navigating the Rehabilitation Process
Morris elaborated on the specifics of Penix’s rehabilitation, stating, “His whole process has started as far as what he’s going to do is kind of laid out for next season, this offseason, moving into it.” The coach emphasized the importance of having Penix back around the facility, where he can engage with the training staff and begin the steps toward recovery.
Following a successful surgery for a torn ACL in his left knee, performed about a month ago after Week 12, Penix faces a lengthy rehabilitation period. This marks the quarterback’s third season-ending knee surgery, and by the time the next season begins, he will be 26 years old. The expected recovery timeline suggests he may be sidelined for at least nine months, potentially impacting his participation in training camp.
Looking Ahead with Caution
While Morris could not provide a definitive timeline for Penix’s return, he did mention that the coaching staff holds internal expectations for his progress in the coming months. “He’s on schedule,” Morris confirmed. The head coach also acknowledged the mental and emotional hurdles Penix must navigate after such a significant injury.
“He has been awesome,” Morris remarked. “You’ve got to go through the realization of going through the issues of the surgery and actually missing the rest of the season. That’s always tough. But actually getting a chance to get out there and get the surgery done and be able to come back, he’s been about as good of spirits as you could be.”
A Season of Growth and Challenges
Despite the injury, Penix’s second NFL season showcased his potential. He completed 60.1% of his passes, accumulating 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions across nine games. As the starter, however, he faced difficulties, ending the season with a 3-6 record.
As uncertainty looms over the Falcons’ quarterback situation, Penix is determined to make the most of this offseason. With a focus on recovery and preparation, he aims to return to the field stronger and ready for his third year in the league. The upcoming months will be crucial not only for his physical health but also for solidifying his place within the team’s future plans.
